Re: Lovely Rita...

Paul wrote this around the phrase his mate came out with, when he observed "I see you've got meter maids around here." He like the alliteration: "I thought it was great. I got to be 'Rita meter maid and then 'lovely Rita meter maid"

I didn't say WHO inspired the song, I said WHAT inspired it.

And you have to be clear in your answer. I'm afraid an answer like Claudia's is too vague.

Re: Lovely Rita...

The song was inspired by the American term for a traffic warden, 'meter maid'. Paul said "I was bopping about on a piano in Liverpool and someone told me that in America they called parking meter women Meter Maids. I thought it was great and it got to be Rita Meter Maid. However, Meta Davis (a real 'meta maid') claimed the song was inspired by her, after she gave Paul's car a ticket in Garden Road. When Paul returned he thought it was funny that her name was Meta, and said he could use that, "it would make a nice jingle."
