George and Denis O'Brien formed Handmade Films after raising money for Monty Pyton's Life of Brian, which gives George credit as executive producer.

a) because George stated that the film industry needed 'a kick up the arse'

b) because George and Denis O'Brian wanted to prove that conventional routes could be circumvented more effectively than anything attempted by Apple.

Maybe because the film had run into financial problems. Possibly because of its controversial content the normal source of finance for Monty Python films wasn't co-operating.

Apr 16 1990 - George appears in Jim Capaldi's video for ‘Oh Lord, Why Lord.' George had done backup for the same song on Capaldi's album ‘Some Come Running.' The video was the only promo video shown at the Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley.

Sorry for the delay, I've been in serious thought (don't laugh) about the answers given and, after careful deliberation, I've decided that old_moon_shining was close enough to deserve the point.

George created Handmade films because a main financer of the Money Python film 'The Life of Brian' had backed out, possibly due to the films blasphamous content, and the film was getting very close to being shelved. Cue George, who was a huge fan of Monty Python, and so created Handmade films by remortgaging his house. So George created Handmade films to give Monry Python the funding it needed so George could see it.
