Re: smoking

Not to make excuses, but I guess we all have our vices, and for all the Beatles, for some time, the smoking thing was one of theirs. I think Ringo is the only one who is still smoking, and he's been the lone one for some time now. We, or most of us, anyway, recognize the very human and falliable side of these individuals. But you're right; in retrospect, for G, it may have been too little, too late. I gotta tell you, though- I was a lot more disracted by the heavy drug use. He was barely recognizable in Sgt. Pepper, and during the Let It Be sessions. His face and weight had all the earmarks of a serious problem. Not that smoking was the lesser of two evils. It may even be a much harder habit to break. I'm still proud of him. He seemed, anyway, in those respects, to have settled down a bit- if you can imagine George needing to "settle down". I would hate just the same, to see him reduce (and I do mean reduced!) to some "Prime" example or model or whatever for some non-smoking campaign. He should be remembered for what he was NOT known for in Life: the Whole, rather than one part. The Beatles, (God bless 'em) were just one aspect of this man's life. He existed before and after them, and he would have been IMPORTANT to SOMEBODY if he'd NEVER been a Beatle, and that goes for them all. Smoking (other than being young, impressionable, or high-strung) was one (temporary) paragraph in the book that became George Harrison. So when you see those pictures, (UNLESS IT DISCOURAGES YOU FROM SMOKING(!), don't let it upset you. We are do stupid things, and we ALL think bad things are what happens to the other guy. Baby boy wasn't any different. He's the same as you and me, except he became a member of a group that became highly successful. And also he was looking to fill that hole we all have inside. I don't think he found what he was looking for until way at the end. SEE?? He actually the "luckiest" person I know. He always did appear to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Well I don't think that they are so bad, especially the ones with Paul smoking.
I think that it is the same whether they are with cigarettes or not.

I have a copy of The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit, and there's a scene in it on the train from NY to DC where George asks John for a cigarette. Whenever I see that, I think, "Ah, George, if you only knew...."

Re: smoking

Tobacco is very addictive; it's tough to quit. My dad managed to quit through sheer willpower, but my brother still smokes.

I don't think it would have been possible for George to be a non-smoker -- too much peer pressure to smoke. Although the U.S. Surgeon General published a report about the hazards of smoking in the 60's, I'm not sure how widespread the news was. I do think there was concern that showing pictures of the Beatles smoking would inspire teenagers to smoke themselves.

The main thing about seeing George smoking is that we now know what that led to.

Re: smoking

beatle_ggirl, I feel the same. I love him and miss him, too. And btw, great post.
Is Ringo still smoking? I thought I'd read or heard that George was the last of the smoking Beatles and that Ringo and Paul had already quit. Of course, I could be wrong.

Re: smoking

If it's your time to go, it's your time to go, simple as that, smoking is bad but in the 60's everyone smoked because there wasn't the publicity about the damage it does. It has also been proven that it is more addictive than heroin, it has also been proven that the only really smoking cannibis would heighten the dangers is because you use tobacco to roll a spliff with but use no filter, therefor it's the tobacco not the cannibis. Cannisbis is fine to eat, just don't smoke it.

Incidently I have just given up smoking after what happened to George and it wasn't or isn't easy, still early days for me. Now I make the odd special cake if I am having a party and we want to use cannibis, to deter people from smoking.

Does Ringo still smoke? I'm not sure.

I heard Paul quit years ago.

Re: smoking

Did anyone else see the interview with George and Eric Clapton for the Japan tour? George was actually talking about how he had quit smoking for some time...as he is sitting there, EC puts his lit cig in the neck of his guitar and lets the smoke waft up to George's face. George actually has to wave it away with his hand. Some short time later, George takes up smoking again. I do not listen to EC after seeing this (except on G's albums, of course). EC is George's friend? I don't think so. I think he has always been jealous...or something. I try to be spiritual about things, but have a real tuff time not seriously disliking EC. Oh, regarding the posts about "serious drug use"...I don't think G ever had a problem like this. He would have written about it. He did "partake" but a serious problem? Nah.

Previewing your post shouldn't cause a double post, Hari's Chick. Did you encounter a server error when you posted the first time? If you try posting after that happens; that's when you get the double post. No biggie, it happens to us all.

Re: smoking

Sally- BRAVO TO YU!! I still am working on it. Boy, is it ever hard. I had quit for 5 yrs, and then I lost my mom, and that became a coping mechanism. But if you don't mind me saying this, I don't think canibis is the answer either. I'm refering to that "hole" again. Been there, done that. I just got tired of trying to "escape", and just wanted to get up the chutzpuh to face up to what was eating at me. I had to jettison a lot of old hurt, and I had to take back the control I had inadvertantly "given" others over my life. I became someone who reacted instead of the one who acted. You get tired of the being the puppet with others ( who never do and never will) have your best interest at heart.
Hari's chick- I was refering to how thin and generally unhealthy he looked, not to mention the bloatedness/pock marks on his face. I'd seen it before. Believe me, I don't need to be right on this one. If you tell me, I'll believe you. It's all water under the bridge, and it's all gonna be okay.
Thank yu all for the compliments. It feels good to talk to you. In the Dave Matthews Band tradition, here's a big "Everyday"-type hug to you all OOOOOOO
