The Stanleys & Lennons of Liverpool... and Beyond

I've found some cool photos and assorted other goodies regarding John's childhood family. Instead of having them buried in the fabulous Family Pic Spam thread, I felt they needed a thread of their own.

So please post any photos, videos, or anything else that's postable of John's pre-Beatles family... uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents, etc.

Let's start with this great interview with Cousin Stanley. If you haven't seen it yet, it's a gem!

Uncle Charlie Lennon

He's second from left here. The child is Aunt Edith's son*:

Here's the pair of them (Uncle Charlie and Aunt Edith's son, whose name I'm not sure of) a few years later:

Uncle Charlie and You-Know-Who:

[EDIT: * = The book I took these from said that the child may have been Aunt Edith's son, but apparently she only had one child, Sandra.]

Thanks for posting that interview with Stanley Parkes. All this time I thought cousin Liela was pronounced Lie-lah. Now I know the proper pronunciation is Lee-lah.

Wow. He was an extremely handsome fellow!

Yes, and looking at his profile and the photos of Granny Polly makes me realize that the famous "Lennon nose" is actually a Maguire trait! (Polly was a Maguire, and Uncle George was not Polly's son; he was from Jack's first wife).

Uncle Charlie told this story about our young John:

Quote:

It was a Saturday morning in Liverpool in 1945. Four-year-old John Lennon stood in Penny Lane, gazing longingly at the toys in a sweetshop window while he and his Uncle Charlie, home on furlough from wartime service, waited for John's mother to return from an errand in a nearby fish shop.

"We're lookin' in the window, and John's pointin' at this tin bus in the window," recalls Charlie, now a robust 79. "I said to him, 'You want that?' So we go in and I buy it for him, don't I? I asked, 'How much for the bus?' They said, "Well, the bus is two pounds fifty, and the Donald Duck...' I said, 'What Donald Duck?' They said, 'The one he's walking out with.' John was walking out the door with a Donald Duck on wheels, pulling it with a piece of string. Mind you, he'd broken it before he got home!

"When I was invited to John's home [in 1967], his dad said to me, 'What are you going to say to John when you see him? You haven't seen him since the Newcastle Road days.' I said, 'I'll ask him for me bus back!" He'd still got the bus-it was up in the music room when I last saw it."

I'm looking for a bigger version of this photo. Looks like the sisters, cousins, and aunties at Mendips:

Looks as if that is one of the photos the family took when they got together for 'The Hard Days Night' premier in '64.

Julia Baird's book has this photo taken the same day, (presumably by Stanley Parkes who is in the photo you have posted but missing from hers!):

The front are Elizabeth, Harriet and Mimi (Stanley), back row John's uncle Norman, cousins Michael and David, and sister Julia and Jackie.

Norman I guess took the first photo you posted!

Here is a picture of John's uncle Sydney Lennon (From Alfred Lennon's second wife Pauline Lennon/Stone's book)

And his and his wife Maggie's gravestone in Canada where they emigrated in 1967. Sydney managed a tailor shop in Liverpool, and lived to 93 years of age.

I think Syd shared his older brother George's good looks! Both were in fact full brothers to John's father, sons of Jack and Polly Lennon. No sons survived Jack's first marriage just a daughter. George was his and Polly's eldest son. Sadly George died of T.B at the family home aged 50, nursed by brother Charlie.
