Other bands' songs that mention The Beatles by name

Wasn't sure if this belonged on the "Not Only A Northern Song" forum, but what the hey...

Name songs by other bands where the word/s "The Beatles" - or other derivatives of the band's name - are mentioned. Give the name of the song, the band's name, and the line where it appears.

I can think of a few right off the bat... but posting them all would not be conducive to the spirit of collaboration. So, here's my first entry:

"Life In a Northern Town" by The Dream Academy

He said "In winter 1963 it felt like the world would freeze. With John F. Kennedy and The Beatles."

mluque125 Jul 13, 2009 08:33 PM

Great thread idea! I always wanted to know all the songs out there that mention them.

"All the Young Dudes" David Bowie

"...We can love. Oh yes, we can love. Brothers back at home with his beatles and his stones. We never got if off on that revolution stuff. It was such a drag..."

Good one! (although I always think of that song as more of a Mott The Hoople track) :wink2:

ringo_rama Jul 13, 2009 08:55 PM

Simon and Garfunkel: "A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd Into Submission" - "I've been Rolling Stone'd and Beatle'd till I'm blind"

Billy Joel: "We Didn't Start the Fire" - "Lawrence of Arabia, British Beatlemania"

Liz Phair: "Dogs of L.A." - "With my Beatle boots and my super-8"

"Weird Al" Yankovic: "One of Those Days" - "Left all my Beatles records out in the sun"

62hofner Jul 13, 2009 09:04 PM

ringo_rama has opened the flood gates! :laugh5:

"All I Want Is Everything" by Jellyfish: "I think I'd like to play guitar and be a Beatle, that'd be so swell..."

"London Calling" by The Clash: "... phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust!"

That song rules!
And heres another Bowie one

Afraid:

"I believe we're not alone
I believe in Beatles
I believe my little soul has grown
And I'm still so afraid"

62hofner Jul 13, 2009 09:45 PM

mluque125 and pepperland... I am not familiar with those songs(!). I'll need to check them out.

62hofner Jul 13, 2009 09:50 PM

"All You Want To Do Is Dance" by Billy Joel: "Ooh, baby you got nothin' to play on the stereo. Why don't The Beatles get back together....?"

heyjude Jul 13, 2009 11:08 PM

Not a song, but Jet the australian band (quite good imo) got their name from the Paul McCartney song.

Johnny Rivers - Summer Rain
All summer long we were dancing in the sand,
Everybody just kept on playing,
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

62hofner Jul 14, 2009 09:05 AM

Thought of a good one last night after I shut down my computer...

"Born In The 50's" by The Police: "They screamed when the Beatles sang. And they laughed when the King fell down the stairs
Oh they should've known better"

bearkat77 Jul 14, 2009 07:06 PM

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one:

"Shooting Star" - Bad Company

Johnny was a school boy when he heard his first Beatles song.
"Love Me Do" I think it was. From there it didnt take him long.

Excellent, bearkat! How could I have forgotten that one? :thumbu2:

feelfab Jul 14, 2009 09:53 PM

World Party: "Sweet Soul Dream"

"... got rare '61 Beatles
I got a film of my dreams..."

feelfab Jul 15, 2009 07:53 AM

Don McLean: "Miss American Pie"

"...now the half-time air was sweet perfume
while sergeants played a marching tune..."

Lucy Jul 15, 2009 09:25 AM

Shania Twain's "When":

"John's back with The Beatles & they're going out on tour"

There is another song that mentions Paul and the Frog Song but for the life of me I can't think of that name of it right now - it is a recent one!!

What about "No Time" by The Monkees:

"Rock on George for Ringo one time"

Yeah, but that was more of an "in-direct" mention - yes?

Yes, but so out in the open I thought it should count as a mention.

Esmirelda Jul 15, 2009 06:43 PM

This one's from the musical, Hair. The song's called Frank Mills:

"He resembles George Harrison of The Beatles, but wears his hair tied in a small bow at the back..."

And

Don't Call Us, We'll Call You by Sugarloaf:

"You ain't bad but we've heard it all before
Yeah it sounds like John, Paul and George"
(Then it plays the riff from Eight Days a Week)

I heard a live version of this recently where they sang "Here Comes The Sun I think it was .."

"Gimme Sympathy" by Metric

Who would you rather be
The Beatles or The Rolling Stones

No one has yet mentioned The Clash and "London Calling":

"London calling, now don't look to us
Phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust"

Then there is "Cook It A While" by Fool's Garden:

"Yes I am far away from home
And though I listen to the Beatles
I am a rolling stone."

digdad Jul 16, 2009 08:27 AM

So you did. It shows you how closely I read everything.:cross2:

Pepperland Kamer Jul 16, 2009 08:47 AM

Some more Bowie songs with Beatle references
Life On Mars-
"Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again"

Survive-
"Beatle boys, all snowy white
Razzle dazzle clubs, every night"

"Be My Yoko Ono" by Barenaked Ladies

"I know that when I say this
I may be stepping on pins and needles.
But I don't like all these people
slagging her for breaking up the Beatles"

I guess "Ringo" didn't rhyme with "before". :laugh5: (not that "George" is a perfect rhyme).

MaccaGirl2891 Jul 25, 2009 02:37 PM

I can't remember what country artist did it, but there's a song called "(They've Got a Love) Bigger Than the Beatles." That's part of the chorus, and during the end of the song, there's "yeah yeah yeah yeah" and harmony like in "She Loves You." Good song.

TNK Aug 19, 2009 04:48 PM

"All I Want For Christmas Is A Beatle" - novelty hit in 1963 by Dora Bryan. It's awful.

heyjude Aug 19, 2009 08:14 PM

I was listening to the radio, and The Seeker by The Who was on:
"I asked Bobby Dylan
I asked The Beatles
I asked Timothy Leary
But he couldn't help me either"

feelfab Aug 21, 2009 06:16 PM

Peter, Paul and Mary--" I Dig Rock and Roll Music" --a truly awful song, but it does say

".. and when the Beatles tell you...'' etc.

beatlebangs1964 Aug 21, 2009 08:49 PM

Joe Diffie's (sp) "I've Got a Love That's Bigger Than the Beatles." I think that is the correct title.

Peter Paul & Mary's "I've Never Been to England" mentions the Beatles. ("I've never been to England, but I kind of like the Beatles...") I hope I got the title correct.

That song is "Never Been To Spain".

hibgal Aug 22, 2009 11:31 AM

I Never Quite Got Over the Fact That the Beatles Broke Up is a song by Per Gessle (from Roxette)

Gary910 Aug 25, 2009 10:30 AM

We Love You Beatles- The Carefrees
My Boyfriend Got A Beatle Haircut - Donna Lynn
The Boy With The Beatle Hair - The Swans
A Letter To The Beatles - The Four Preps

A bunch of novelty songs. The only one I vaguely like is "We Love You Beatles".
