View Full Version : A Song For John Lennon...

Here's an idea. What about we all club together and try and write a song between us all for John? When it's finished we could send it to Paul and see what he thinks. We'll cross the bridge of money when he get to it.
Do you think we should write a completely new tune, or just nick one?

We could at least try.
How are we going to exchange ideas, and the tune?

Great idea, who are the musicians in the gang? they should compose (or nick!) the tune, and those of a poetical bent, the lyrics. If I recall, Penny is a bit of a scribe, and I like to jot a lyric or 7 myself. As to how we hear the tune, waaaaay beyond me!!

A few of us are 'musicians' here.
It would be cool to have a harmonica piece in it somewhere, in reference to John and the early days.

LenMc. But I thought of the idea. Why don't I get the final say? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif
In fact, I've got a few small tunes going around my head. I've also got a MIDI sequencer, and a keyboard, so I can send ideas along like that. If anyone has any chord sequences that they'd like to pass over, then I'll record them into MIDI format, then post them up and see what everyone thinks.
I'm also quite good with a harmonica, so I could do that?
I was thinking that this song could be about John's life, and then see if anything could be done with it around December 8th?
Do you think that every verse should reflect on an era of his life? Like the first verse could be about Hamburg and the Cavern. The 2nd could be Beatlemania, the 3rd about the films, the 4th about Yoko, and so on. What do you think?
I'm glad everyone likes the idea.

I've got a fair few tunes, and you can listen to them, I don't mind. Hmm, let me see - I have a few samples I recorded on the computer, they are not very long, and a couple of hundred K's in size, but I could send you a couple.
Let me know.

Do you think we should change the style of the music in each verse? Verse one could reflect Hamburg and be like Rock 'n' roll type music. Then so to a more softer, Rubber Soul type style, then a progressive type like on Sgt. Pepper, then finish with a haunting piano finale.
Has anyone thought of any lyrics at all yet?
We could exchage ideas through email so that people won't just come on, steal the ideas, and leave us in the lurch. If someone with the list of our emails (Like Jerry) could email the relavant addys to us, or we could post them on this forum.

Please dont laugh folks, but I had to set the ball rolling, see if you people can improve this! (pleeeaassee)
(to Rock & Roll type Music)
With your hair slicked back and your leathers in black, playing rock'n'roll
like a heart attack,
You acted so cool like you just dont care,
a rock'n'roll rebel with your slicked back hair.
But we all knew the truth,
with the wisdom that comes with youth,
John Lennon........ was the worlds best friend.
Well you found a blood brother, and the music flowed, with the rest of the band, you had our souls, as the newspapers wrote of the kings of pop, the madness around you could not stop,
And although you thought nothing of,
all the fame and all the love.
Johnny, you were the worlds best friend.
Whe things got rough and you found a new friend, everybody knew that this was the end, we wanted to keep you amongst us here, but how could we find you, you were nowhere near. nowhere near.....
Well its many years later, and you are gone, and all of your freinds really miss you John. We know your'e mixing it with rock'n'roll stars, Elvis and Buddy and you on guitar.
Your music is living on, there will always only one......Lennon, the worlds best friend.

Brilliant lyrics. I think they're cool, and I've got a tune flowing around my head. I'm sure John would have loved a rock 'n' roll song about himself. It's a pity that it's only beginning to happen 20 years after he died. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cry.gif
For people who know, shall we use the traditional blues chords for this, or invent an original chord sequence?

Right. I've got a good little tune in a basic state, but it's there. I'll transfer it into MIDI tonight and hopefully it'll be ready for tomorrow. I have written 2 pieces really. One a haunting ballad, and the other a bit more upbeat and more of a rock song.
I don't really want to put a link to it on the forum as anyone then can download a copy and pretend it their own, so I'd like to email it around the close-knit community here. If you'd like a copy, then put your email address underneath. If you don't want to do that, then email me on the_beatles@beatlemail.com and I'll send you a copy. Please also tell me who you are because otherwise I might not know and not send it.
I'm just a very cautious person.

I've done it. I've just this minute finished a brilliant tune. I've invented a new and original chord sequence, and it sounds like an early rock 'n' roll Beatles number. I love it. I can't believe I can write them like this!
I'm just going now to email both the MIDI file, Lyrics, and chords to the people who have told me their email addys.

Hi all, France was wonderful, warm, friendly people, great food, great wine, and good company, what more do you need? oh yeah, Beatles music! Well I did bring some, but I was with other people, so couldnt really dominate, but Liverpool should sort me out for THAT particular fix!!
Harbs music is great, I am truly impressed, and I think that we should publish!
I am going to try to have a band play the song at our convention in Dublin in November, if that is OK with you guys, since it really belongs to the forum. Any objections?
