John Lennon's murder has been named the most shocking moment in music in a poll by music channel VH1.

The killing of the ex-Beatle by *** in 1980 tops a list of 100 chilling episodes in rock and pop.

The list will be counted down by the station this week in shows hosted by comic Vic Reeves.

Child abuse allegations levelled against Michael Jackson came second in the list drawn up by music industry figures in the US and UK for the channel.

Lennon also features again in the top 10 for his comment that the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus" which outraged groups in the 1960s.

Other events in the list include Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's sex video being seen by a wider public (number 20), George Michael's arrest for indecent exposure (28) and David Bowie being pictured giving a Nazi salute at Victoria Station (37).

The countdown reaches a peak with the top 20 being broadcast on Friday, with a repeat of the full 100 the following day.

I think this was just on VH1 Europe, Rell...it wasn't on overseas at the same time it was on over here, and I saw some other discussion of it on other lists from European members.

I remember reading the list when VH1 first released it. If I recall correctly, there were several other Beatle entries on that list, including the butcher cover and the "Two Virgins" cover. I also remember noticing a lot of the Beatle entries could be linked to John. Hum, maybe we should give him a new nickname -- "The Shocking One!" http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Thanks for the John article, Amalthea! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup2.gif

Kind of wierd because John never stopped shocking people with his outgoing nature since the day he was born.
