I read somewhere that when he performed in the early days(I guess), he went onstage without seeing anything. No glasses or contacts.

I'm going from memory here, but I recall soon after John died Yoko released a statement to the press about how she explained what happened to Sean about his father and how after he died she called the three people John would most want to know, Julian, Aunt Mimi, and Paul. I'm guessing that means regardless of their personal differences there was a lot of love there between the two.

"Legally blind" doesn't mean you're blind as in you can't see at all, it means your vision, uncorrected, is so poor that you virtually cannot see anything because it's just one big white blur. John was EXTREMELY nearsighted -- it's entirely possible that without correction (i.e., glasses or contact lenses) he could not see well enough to function...remember, there are plenty of stories about how he refused to wear his glasses and didn't recognize people until they were standing right on top of him! Also, probably one of the reasons he stood so close to the mike in the early days (when he went onstage without his glasses and didn't have contacts) was because he couldn't SEE the darn thing unless he was that close to it!
Anyway, it is entirely possible that without visual correction, John was what would be termed "legally blind."

I had my entire class on hands and knees searching for my contact after I was elbowed in the eye, it turned up in my eye. It was still great fun to see what power a contact wearing person has over those around them.

Liz, your friend might own Cynthia's book (so do I, so do a gazillion other people -- oh, and Cyn whitewashed a lot of the story), be a "True John Lennon Fan," and "know everything there is to know about John Lennon," but I somehow doubt that...I've been a Beatles/John fan for 28 years, and I wouldn't presume to say that! (I have over 150 books on John and the Beatles published over the last 38 years, lest you think I don't have information at my fingertips -- and there are a lot of people here who have even more info than I do.) Besides, ANY fan's "knowledge" of John only extends as far as the sources they use to get their information...the only person who MIGHT "know everything there is to know" would probably be Yoko, or to a lesser extent, Julian or Sean or Cynthia...
At any rate, not EVERY website is completely erroneous, nor is every book reliable...unless someone heard the info from John himself, it's unlikely ANY fan really "knows all there is to know."
BTW, a lot of the stuff Sophie posted I have read or heard from various "reliable" sources in the past.

A few weird answers here on this one. John wore contacts? I didn't think contact were around (especially in Britain) until the 1970's. Even if he did wear them, they would have been way to expensive for him until they started making real coin (late 63-64). As for him sleeping with the light on because he hated the dark...how does anybody know that one, except may be Yoko or Cynthia? Same goes for the "Paul and John were never as close aas they appeared"...way to subjective a comment. How do you know? Did Paul tell you over at his house while having tea? Finally, most Beatle fans will agree that the death of their manager, Brian Epstien, started the dissention that would eventually break up the group.

I've seen those "facts." Someone told me, (I forgot who) once that those facts were from Albert Goldman. Some of them are strange (like the "hating the dark one" and "closeness" of John and Paul). Becareful what you read.
peaceflame-you're vision is 20/800? Can your vision be corrected?
I'm legally blind. (In some ways I'm like John, I guess, because I have to get really close at things to see them ---i.e. print, computer screen etc. and when people are standing right in front of me, I don't know who they are, even if I saw them the day before. To be considered "legally blind" one's vision has be 20/200 in both eyes and cannot be corrected. At least that's how I heard it. My vision in my left eye is 20/400, and I have none in my right eye. Glasses won't help, my retinas are too damaged.
About the contacts--I also read that John wore contacts in the early sixties, but hated them and put on his glasses. Oh well, but really read in between those "facts" so of them are off the wall.

That's great that the surgery worked for your aunt. It may work for you, too. When people see me at stores or where ever, sometimes they'll ask why I look so close at things (and not always in the nicest way), then they'll say that I need glasses or surgery (as if they're my doctor and know my needs). I tell them that neither glasses nor surgery would work. But I go along in life okay--some days are better than others.

yes, 20/800 in both eyes.(and i'm only 15! Arrggghh) i have no idea if it can be corrected by laser surgery, but i cannot LIVE without my contacts or glasses. i want to get the laser surgery, but i am scared because there are some negative effects. BUT, on the other hand, my aunt was 20/2000 (yes, two THOUSAND that is not a typo) and she had laser surgery and it came out 20/30. sooo, i might look into that when i am older.
so i'm not legally blind...yet. I FEEL legally blind. lol.

My uncle is an eye doctor or something like that and he says that usually people can't have laser surgery till they're older cos the eye is still growing.
And I know how you feel about the cannot LIVE w/o contacts or glasses. Today, my contact fell out in history and the teacher wouldn't let me find it or go put it back in so I was bumping into stuff like all day long.

In 1996 I ordered some John Lennon stamps from the country of Chad through The International Collector's Society. With the stamps came a tiny booklet (a piece of paper folded in half) that was entitled '99 Little Known Facts About John Lennon'. This is definately what Lucy found on the internet although I don't know if what I was sent was handed down to the society from some other source. I was fascinated to learn such facts as "19.The Beatles did not confrom to the standard practice of having one star and a backing band" and almost fell out of my chair when I learned that "24.The Beatles haircuts were just as appealing as their music at first". Alot of the facts are preceeded by words such as "Supposedly" and "John may have". For instance, "65. Yoko had a miscarriage which was rumored to have been the result of a beating". Considering the fact that other items make mention of John attacking sailors and that he felt guilty about Stu's death which resulted from a beating, I got the feeling that this booklet was implicating John in Yoko's miscarriage, especially seeing as how other facts claim that "94.Lennon was a hypochondriac who suffered from many self inflicted pains and aches" and include other details purporting that he was a violent, unbalanced, self-destructive human being. Some of this stuff falls just short of "John liked to go to orphanges to remind children that Santa Claus didn't exist". I hope that I don't sound rude to Lucy, seeing as how all she did was discover something of interest and go to the trouble of sharing it with everyone, but alot of these items carry the stench of a Goldman or Guilliano.

Yep, I too, bought JL stamps in 1996 (from Tanzania (sp) though). Mine also came with a folded peice of paper entitled "99 Little Known Facts about John Lennon" or something like that. The more I read them, the more I believed they are laced with the two G's. (Goldman and Guiliano).
