The fifth of November is in reference to Guy Fawkes Day. A festival of sorts in England. Many years ago, Fawkes had planned to blow up Parliment but was unsuccessful. So now they celebrate the fact that he failed. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/bigeyes1.gif

Thanks, I'd always wondered about that...
(hence the sound of an explosion afetr John sings that line...).

While, we're at it, the "bloody Sunday" John refers to on "Sometime in New York City" is about what ? I'm pretty sure it has to do with the Ireland situation at that time but I don't know the specifics...

You're right, ABCKO, 'Bloody Sunday' does refer to the situation in Ireland. In the early 1970's in Northern Ireland a protest march was organised to protest against imprisonment without trial. A few people started some trouble, and the British army reacted by shooting and killing several innocent people. There was a lot of outrage about it in Ireland and Britain, and John obviously felt quite strongly about it too.

Actually it was long before John's song. It happened in 1605.

While we're on the question topic, back when John was with the Beatles, in the song "I Am the Walrus" what exactly was he referring to when he sang "Stupid, bloody Tuesday"?? I've heard it had something to do with Paul's actual motorbike wreck one morning... Is this the truth???
