SF4-EVER

Well, with the Lennon tribute last week and the way "Imagine" has suddenly gained new meaning, thoughts of John and the victims at the WTC have been mixing in my mind. So, as an early birthday present for John, I wrote a poem about it all. It's just an "off-the-cuff" poem I wrote tonight, but I figured I'd post it in case people were interested.
Imagine
No native New Yorker,
But still he called it home.
An enigma incarnate,
As white and black as us all.
Mastering the world through music
Before mastering himself.
Walking the streets one day,
Translated elsewhere the next.
Leaving one word in black and white:
"Imagine."
Women changing sneakers for heels,
Men on the phone to their children,
Visitors looking for a view,
Travelers headed to work or home or fun,
All met in that one fatal instant.
Everyday heroes joining them in death.
The world watching in horror,
Reality now something we never could
Imagine.
Burn candles now for all of them
At that black-and-white circle.
For one moment,
Remember the faces, his and theirs.
Catch their light now;
It flickers in the darkness.
Let the light, the peace burn in you,
Then make your way back to the world
And make the world a place
Where war and hate
Are something we can only
Imagine.
