More Artists, Songs Confirmed For Lennon Tribute
Rufus Wainwright and Craig David are among the acts that have been added to the lineup for the John Lennon tribute, "Come Together: A Night For John Lennon's Words & Music, Dedicated to New York City & Its People." As previously reported, the event will be broadcast live Tuesday (Oct. 2) at 8 p.m. ET on TNT and the WB Network.
Also joining the lineup are Lennon's son Sean and frequent Beatles sideman Billy Preston. Newly announced segment presenters include film stars Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Stiles, Steve Buscemi, and Tim Roth, as well as Edie Falco and James Gandolfini from "The Sopranos."
"Come Together" will feature previously announced performances by Alanis Morissette, Cyndi Lauper, Dave Matthews, the Isley Brothers, Lou Reed, Marc Anthony, Moby, Nelly Furtado, Shelby Lynne, Stone Temple Pilots, and Yolanda Adams. The affair will be hosted by actor Kevin Spacey ("American Beauty"), and Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) will serve as musical director. Organizers say additional performers and presenters will be announced prior to the event.
At deadline, the show is confirmed to feature Matthews performing "In My Life," Stone Temple Pilots covering "Revolution," Anthony tackling "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," Morissette recasting "Dear Prudence," and Cyndi Lauper taking on "Strawberry Fields Forever."
Proceeds will benefit a host of charities in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks on the U.S., including the American Red Cross, the September 11th Fund, the International Association of Fire Fighters, and the New York Fraternal Order of Police WTC Fund.

Hey everyone! So, what did you all think of the tribute? Pretty moving on the whole, a great way to introduce more people to John and his message.
I loved Craig David's version of Come Together, Alanis' Dear Prudence...Stone Temple Pilots. But. I imagine I will come under some fire here. Sean cannot sing. I had never seen or heard him perform before, and weeeeell....Mercy. Ouch. Kevin Spacey was sooo sincere...but should not quit his day job. And Marc Anthony (Lucy in the Sky) ooohhhhh noooooo....
I wonder why Julian did not perform? I would have liked to hear from him.
Enough of my bitchin' - anyone else?

Wow! It was amazing. I loved Stone Temple Pilots singing Revolution. They rocked! Alanis was great and Kevin Spacey. I just love him. I am amazed at the turnout.
Sean is an ok singer. I wish Julian and Paul would have been there http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif I hope they sell this on DVD and CD.

I talked about this in one of the other topics on this subject ... I absolutely loved the tribute. Everyone there did a fantastic job with the songs ... even little 'ol Sean, although Julian is way more talented ... in my book, anyway. Kevin Spacey rocks as an actor, and now as a singer! He was great! The Stone Temple Pilots were the best, I thought. Good!Good! Very good!!!!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

I liked the show, it was alright. STP's 'Revolution' was good...but they forgot to say "in" when singing "count me out..." oh,well. I also liked Alanis Morrisette's version of 'Dear Prudence', even though I'm not a fan of hers. Cyndi Lauper's 'Strawberry Fields' was interesting and a nice tribute since it was sung in Strawberry Fields in Central Park. I did like Kevin Spacey's 'Mind Games.' And Sean's performance was very good--of 'Julia', 'ATU,' and 'This Boy.' That one segment with John and young Sean talking about how there are 365 days in a year was so cute! I've never heard that dialogue before.
There were performances I didn't care for like the R&B/Gospel-like 'Imagine'. It was *way* overdone. Lou Reed's 'Jealous Guy' sounded too angry compared to John's soulful and heartfelt version. Dave Matthews guitar playing was good on 'In My Life' but I didn't really care for his vocal. I really didn't care for the rap in 'Come Together.' The ending was okay...it was funny that no one remembered the lyrics to 'Power to the People.' Yoko's speech almost made me cry.
I've been on some other boards where people were complaining about there not being any pictures of Julian and John and that they made it sound like he only had one son. Whatever...people will find anything to complain about. The reason Julian didn't show up...that's his problem. I kept wondering who the special guest was...was it Sean? I thought it was going to be Ringo, Paul, or Elton John.
What do you think of Paul putting on his own concert (when he could've showed up for a tribute to his partner and bandmate). Do you think he's trying to "be equal" to John? Has his ego grown too large? Or is he just wanting to perform for a benefit concert? There were things about that on another list too, about Paul not showing up and then doing his own concert. I don't know...I think he could've showed up. I heard Ringo was on tour, and George probably wouldn't have been well enough to perform. But, oh well, the concert was pretty good. I wished there were more well-known performers, than mediocre ones. Just my opinion...

Thanks for that, Kristi. Very interesting points, I must say, especially about Paul's non-appearance. I look forward to seeing this show some time (if they ever show it down here).

[/B][/QUOTE]I was going to share my thoughts
about the tribute also, but after having read all of your comments--(Kristi) I realized that you posted most of my thoughts
and sentiments about the show anyway!!
Perhaps it's not a coincidence we have just
about the same signatures after all!~...
I'd just like to add though that Kevin
Spacey doing "Mind Games" was a heartfelt
version of the song in my opinion, and though
he's not typically "the singer", I didn't really hear a wrong note. And I also thought
that Marc Anthony did a pretty emotional
"Lucy in the Sky"... Also, I would
have much rather heard Julian or Paul sing
"Nowhere Man" than Natalie Merchant, though
she did a nice rendition of it-- and yes,
couldn't (and shouldn't have!) Paul and
Julian BEEN there??!... that would have made
the evening I say!! And finally, I think
Sean's guitar playing was impressive...parti-
cularly on "Julia". --JC
