View Full Version : Woman by the Bee Gees!?!?!?!

Yesterday, when my mom and I were in the car driving back home from Lebanon, IN after getting my purse back with nothing stolen (Thank God), the song 'Woman' came on Chicago's 'Lite Rock' station (93.9). I say to mom, "You know who this is don't you?" I said it because a Paul song came on ealier (Maybe I'm Amazed) and she asked the same thing. Anyway, she said, "It's the Bee Gees, right?" I said, "No! It's John Lennon!" And she's like, "No, I really think it's the Bee Gees." She was *serious!* Then, I said, "Well, John did like the Bee Gees, but it *is* him!" I kept telling her that I'd show her the CD that the song is on, play interviews with John talking about 'Woman' and even show her the video that accompanied the song. I then said, "But I don't think you want to see that (the video). It shows them making love." And she said, "That's gross." I said, "It's simulated."
She said, "Well, it's still disgusting."
Whatever. When the DJ announced the songs, I think she heard John's name and not the Bee Gees. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif At least by now I *think* she realizes *John* did that song, and *not* the Bee Gees. Although the Bee Gees are good too--disco and their early stuff. Just thought I'd share this funny conversation with you. Has anyone else you know (or yourself) mistaken a song, when it really was a Lennon song, or a Beatles song? I did that with Badfinger a lot, thinking they were the Beatles for awhile there. Now, I know better.

The first time I heard Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom, I thought for sure it must be a Beatles song. (My excuse must be that I was 13, and new to Beatles' music). I think that's the only time I've made that sort of mistake. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

The 1st time I heard "Don't Ask Me Why" by Billy Joel, I thought it could have been Paul. But then again, I think a lot of Billy's stuff is very Beatlesque, especially "The Nylon Curtain".

The first time I heard about Klaatu, I thought it could be the Beatles under an assumed name. After playing the album over and over, I really thought it was them. By the time Klaatu's second album came out, I realized it wasn't the Beatles after all.

I agree with Kristi's mom ..... I've always thought that Lennon and the guys from The Bee Gee's sound so much alike. They have that nasaly type sound ~ lovely!!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
A lot of ELO's stuff sounds very Beatleish too.

i was actually having a conversation with my mother, when a plug for 'the fab four' (one of our southern california tribute bands) and their upcoming concert in santa barbara came on. i asked her (since she was in her early/mid twenties when the beatles emerged and broke up) which beatle was her favorite - fully expecting her to say "paul" (as she tends to "not appreciate" more innovative/experimental kinds of music). she responded with a very definate, "john". i began to laugh, and asked why... she said, "because he seemed to be the most talented." so i thought i'd give her a little quiz and began asking her what her favorite songs were... every single song she named was a "paul-song", like 'yesterday', 'let it be', 'the long and winding road', etc. anyhow... i got a good laugh out of our talk, and she has been enlightened (though i doubt she really cares) http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Allie, this reminds me of the time when John and Yoko were eating in a restaurant, and a violinist came over and played "Yesterday" to them. John was gracious enough to sign the violin for the guy at his request, but I don't think he was as flattered as he would have been if the musician had played a John song. Any one else ever mistake a John song for a Paul one, or vice versa?

The Bee Gees have often declared being influenced by the Beatles. They even recorded an album with Beatles songs. Maurice did come close to John re voice - listen to To Love Somebody - but Barry's after SNFever falcetto voice does not come close to John. George did many falcetto backing vocals.
Great band The Bee Gees. Also saw them live about 6 times.

There have been a few times when that's happened. There also have been a few times when I would listen to a track and would think John is singing when it was really Paul or vice versa.
