View Full Version : John and Yoko's Peace Campaign

I was thinking about something the other day. What do you all think of John and Yoko's peace campaign of the late 60's/early 70's? Do you think it was really worthwhile or a waste of time. I think I read somewhere that Paul said something like "They (John and Yoko) helped save people in Vietnam." (or something like that). Do you think they did in some way, maybe they couldn't physically save someone from the Vietnam War but maybe they really did save people by way of song (i.e. Give Peace A Chance). Did people back then really listen to that song and get it's message or did they think it was just nonsense. What about the Bed-Ins...do you those were ridiculous or helpful?

I think they were probably ridiculous AND helpful, if that makes any sense! I think most people dismissed them as being the doings of a bunch of crazy hippies, but at least it raised some awareness and got people talking about the issues. So even though their methods were a little goofy, I think they made some impression, and that may be all they were looking to do.

I think they had a lot of interesting ways to make people aware of what was going on back then; the war, for example. It's like they used humor to do that, too. //0-0\\ //~~\\

I think that even if they didn't help end the war, it helped many people put their energies into a good cause. It took their minds off of the war, and it gave them something to fight for. They were trying to make a difference, instead of sitting around wishing there was something they could do. It gave people the courage and strength to voice their opinions and concerns about the war. I also like when John said that it doesn't matter what he he was wearing, or the length of his hair. I think they were also trying to prove a point in a way. How people would spend a week talking to a celebrity sitting in bed.

When it was just the Bed-Ins and the acorns and the War Is Over signs it was all good.
Where it went bad was the early 70(c.71) when they feel in with Jerry rubin and abby hoffman. Bought them a lot of trouble.
