I have an Apple record by the name of "The Pope Smokes Dope" by David Peel (from 1971 or 72?) who looks like Howard Stern and doesn't have the greatest voice. It is produced by John & Yoko and there's a cut called "The Ballad of John Lennon & Yoko Ono" (not the Beatle tune) in which John & Yoko speak before the cut starts. Does anyone else own this? And is it worth anything? It's in good shape and you can believe me when I say it's hardly been played.

I've heard of it, but I haven't actually heard it. I'll have to do some digging to see what I can "unearth" about it.

There's a reference to this in John's "New York City", in the lyrics:
Standing on the corner
Just me and Yoko Ono
We was waiting for Jerry to land
Up come a man with a guitar in his hand
Singing, "Have a marijuana if you can"
His name was David Peel
And we found that he was real
He sang, "The Pope smokes dope every day"
Up come a policeman shoved us up the street
Singing, "Power to the people today!"

God, I actually MET David Peel at Beatlefest YEARS ago...like 1977 or so, I mean...he actually occasionally shows up at the NY fests, and man, is he ever FRIED...he was one seriously weird guy before, but he has joined the ranks of the seriously warped by too many drugs...
No idea what that record might be worth, but of course with the J&Y connection it probably has SOME value...

Oh, I know what you mean about David Peel being FRIED, Susan. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif I heard an interview with him on the ABC website dedicated to John Lennon (I believe that site is still up, if you haven't been there, it's really worth a look--interviews, pictures etc). Anyway, in the interview, he looked like a freak and sounded like he was really stoned (probably was). LOL! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif If anyone hasn't been to the site, it's at: http://abcnews.go.com/onair/lennon/index.html
The site is called "Lennon in New York."

Peel definitely looked and acted "spaced out" in the video interview. Downloaded the song on MP3, so if it's worth anything I'll keep it. Otherwise, in the trash it will go.

One of the best things I ever read in a fanzine was when they were reviewing the most recent album by Paul (they loved it) and the most recent album by David Peel (they hated it). The last line in the review was...."So, in summary, I find Paul appealing and Peel appalling..." http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/laugh3.gif

I was AT that convention and Peel's donkey ain't hitched to his cart. The man is bloody demented! I saw him on the Moron Downey Jr. show in late 1988 with his band of street musicians wearing book buster t-shirts with Goldman's book enclosed in the slashed circle. They and Moron threw the book around, baited one another, said stupid things and Moron dropped the book in his aquarium.
On New Year's Eve 1988 I saw Peel in Times Square. He and his band of street musicians beat on garbage can lids with sticks chanting, "Die, Yuppie Scum!" and "We Are From the Lower East Side." I doubt the Lower East Side would be so ready to recognize these kooks! They were tickled when I and others mentioned seeing them on Moron's show. One would think they'd be embarrassed, but that would take more sense than they are capable of.

Susan,
Remember Peel's stupid animated video and his song, "Bring Back the Beatles."
Bring back the Beatles,
Paul McCartney, John Lennon.
Bring back the Beatles,
Ringo Starr, George Harrison.
The man is fried, scrambled and left seriously impaired. I really think he should be under a doctor's care.

Paul appealling and Peel appalling - clever! I wish I'd thought of it!
As a Catholic, I confess I found "The Pope Smokes Dope" offensive years ago. When I finally met Peel (why was that kook even invited to Beatlefest is anybody's good guess) I realized the man is too damn deranged to be offensive. He is just a kook whose donkey ain't hitched to his cart. The man is demented, plain and simple.
Why isn't he under a doctor's care?

Oh this guy is nuts....he used to play in the Village at a bar that's no longer there, 80-82ish I actually sat and watched, just because he had spent time with John....I did see him at Strawberry Fields one 10/9, obnoxious...., I thought he may be gone, incarcerated, dead, it was years ago. Anyone know??

No clue...I saw him at Beatlefest NY about 10 or so years ago, he was wandering around the dealer room being an idiot.
He's SERIOUSLY fried, consequences of too many mind-altering substances ingested too frequently, methinks...http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/smoking1.gif
I did a quick search -- he's got a website and apparently is in some movie produced by High Times with Tommy Chong, who is as fried as Peel is (and I bet Cheech Marin is VERY glad he's outta THAT partnership!). Here's the URL, but it doesn't say much:

The Pope Smokes Dope is one of the best albums around. I am friends(and work) with david and many of the members of the Lower East Side. They are great musicians and should be hailed for believing in what they believe in. The album is history. John and yoko believed in it and should be treasured in any collection.

I would hardly call that album "one of the best albums ever." Perhaps only if one is spending one's time smokin' dope with the Pope... images/icons/wink.gif

... Actually they distanced themselves from David, Myself, and the guys. Because John's attorney advised him to break off contact with all radicals for the upcoming immigration hearings.
