Beatles-era guru launches bid to set up world peace university

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a 1960s guru famed for his links to The Beatles, launched a fund to collect one billion dollars to set up a University of World Peace.

Film director David Lynch endorsed the launch of the permanent endowment, in an effort that seeks to fund scholarships for 8,000 meditation experts who, by meditating, aim to reduce world tension, terrorism and conflict, event organizers said.

"I am really happy to support Maharishi's plan for world peace," the award-winning director said during a press launch near Washington linked by video satellite to the guru.

"If this group of 8,000 transcendental meditation meditators get together and go day in and day out we will have peace on earth. The science is there, the technology is there, the knowledge," Lynch added.

"The time of barbarism can be put an end to," said 85-year-old Maharishi, speaking live from his headquarters in the Netherlands. "The time is coming now for change."

US film director David Lynch (R) and real estate developer Jeffrey Abramson (L) join others in mediation at the World Peace Palace in Maryland, trying to raise 1 billion dollars to build a University of World Peace.

David Lynch is the father of my sister's friend, so this story is extra interesting for me!

I think this is fantastic! I mean, we have all kinds of universities giving us technology to make new weapons, so this is the other side of that...the good side. I believe in this work. graemlins/thumbsup2.gif

It sounds perhaps far out, but like the plant studies at UC Berkeley long ago...you can affect living creatures this way. Also, like George said when talking about Within You Without You..."The space between us is buzzing as well...."

This does indeed warm my graemlins/heart2.gif

It is so refreshing to see something positive and uplifting like this being reported.

I see nothing far out about this - on the contrary, I think it is long past time and way overdue that peace and gentle methods of instilling peace were taught. How George would have loved this! graemlins/thumbsup2.gif

And yeah, George would certainly have endorsed this I am sure because he had such a deep and intense reverence for life. images/icons/smile.gif
