THE most famous album cover in pop music history has been transformed to celebrate Liverpool's cultural icons.

The Beatles' 1967 Sgt Pepper album design has been re-worked by original artist Sir Peter Blake in recognition of the unique talent generated by the city.

The original cover was recently acclaimed by design historian Jonathan Glancey as one of the defining images of the 1960s.

The new collage replaces the original "magical crowd" with an array of famous Merseysiders.

Sir Peter Blake will today unveil the new collage which features 62 famous Merseysiders.

Among those included alongside the Fab Four are pop stars Atomic Kitten, Elvis Costello, and Mel C, writers Beryl Bainbridge, Willy Russell and Alan Bleasdale, and actors and entertainers Rex Harrison, Kim Cattrall, Ken Dodd, Cilla Black and Johnny Vegas.

Sporting heroes have not been forgotten, with Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney making an appearance.

Politicians William Gladstone, Harold Wilson, and Jack Jones will also be lined up, alongside broadcasters John Peel and Anne Robinson.

The cutting edge of Liverpool's cultural renaissance will be there in the form of artist Fiona Banner, Whitbread poetry prize-winner Paul Farley, and cult film maker Alex Cox.

Sir Peter's work also depicts representatives of Liverpool's "creative diaspora" including actress Halle Berry and comic star Mike Myers.

The Tate gallery commissioned the collage after a meeting with Liverpool PR company October Communications highlighted the number of big names with connections to the city.

After all the images - many of which come from the Daily Post & Liverpool Echo photographic archives - were collated, Sir Peter had just five days to complete the collage, which is being shown at the Tate in London.

It is hoped it can be brought up to Liverpool later.

Chief executive of the Liverpool Culture Company Sir Bob Scott described the image as "an extraordinary and vivid depiction of Liverpool's creative spirit."

Sir Bob, who is spearheading the city's European Capital of Culture bid said: "Sir Peter's work perfectly expresses the extraordinary diversity of Liverpool's personality.

"This is an exceptional and stimulating city. It can be charming, humorous and witty, as well as irreverent, opinionated and challenging.

"It is always pioneering and passionate, but never mundane or mediocre.

"Liverpool's identity has been forged by global influences, and the city has in turn exported its talent and culture to the four corners of the earth. Liverpool can truly claim to be the world in one city."

Sir Bob said the collage represented Liverpool's sense of continuity.

He said: "The city is continually renewing and expressing itself. Culture and creativity are not an add-on to life in Liverpool, they are an integral part of what the city is and what it is becoming."

An artist has reworked his most famous design to pay tribute to Merseyside's most famous faces.
Sir Peter Blake has produced a collage inspired by his cover design for The Beatles' Sgt Pepper album, replacing the crowd with 62 famous faces with Merseyside roots.

Movie stars Halle Berry and Mike Myers - whose local connections are less obvious than many included - are two of the most famous faces featured.

Sir Peter's design pays tribute to Merseyside's "unique capacity to generate cultural icons".

Across the rest of the collage, The Beatles are joined by the likes of ex-Prime Minister William Gladstone, Ken Dodd, Atomic Kitten, Elvis Costello, comedian Johnny Vegas, author Beryl Bainbridge, Cilla Black and Michael Owen.

Kim Cattrell, star of Sex and the City, who was born in Liverpool, also features.

He said: "I think my affection for Liverpool comes from the people.

"I know it's a cliché, but there is a humour about Liverpudlians from the taxi drivers to the people in cafes and pubs."

Sir Peter's 1967 artwork for the Beatles' album cover has become his most famous design.

Sir Peter was knighted last year for his work.

Sir Bob Scott, chief executive of the Liverpool culture company, said: "I think what is really brilliant about Sir Peter's collage is that it represents that sense of continuity.

"A city that is continually renewing and expressing itself - a pool of life.

"Culture and creativity are not an add-on to life in Liverpool, they are an integral part of what the city is and what it is becoming."

Liverpool will find out next month whether its bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2008 has been successful.

Both of those parody covers are cool...I couldn't get a good look at the second one but I thought I noticed a few artists/famjous paintings.

How can they do a Merseyside hommage cover and forget both Clive Barker and Olaf Stapledon? What, the writers are somehow not worthy of addition?

Maybe I'm nearsighted; if anyone can see these gents in the redone cover, please let me know:

Somehow I'm not too crazy about seeing spinoffs of the Sgt Pepper cover.
Hey, call me sentimental of the classic original.
