McCartney's "flu germs" for sale on Internet

LONDON (Reuters) - Fans of former-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney have been invited to bid for a tiny piece of musical history -- germs from a bout of flu that caused him to cancel a recent gig.

After two days on the ebay.co.uk website, the germs have received two bids, the highest for 1.2 pounds and come from fan Ian Mears who claims he caught the bug from McCartney when he met him earlier this month.

"I believe this is the same strain of flu, and effectively his virus," Londoner Mears told the Daily Star on Wednesday. "I had no cold on the Saturday, then on Sunday I spent most of the afternoon with Paul and by Tuesday I too had a cold."

Successful bidders will receive their germs by post. "The highest bidder will receive a resealable bag that I will cough into," he said. "Or if preferred, they can have a plastic container full of mucus."

So people are bidding for a plastic bag!!

I'm sorry, that is just SICK! Completely insane! graemlins/afraid1.gif

Reminds me, though, of a story I once heard Martha Quinn, one of MTV's original VJ's, tell about Paul...she did an interview with him, and during the interview he was drinking a cup of tea. They finished the interview, said their goodbyes, and she saw his used teacup sitting on the table with the dregs in it, and she DRANK THE DREGS! She said she figured if she was going to get a disease, who better to get it from than Paul! graemlins/laugh2.gif

This is one of the silliest things I've seen in a long time. I would seriously wonder about the sanity of anybody who would bid on something like that though.....time for that little mental check-up, no?

I think that is sick and sickening. graemlins/barf4.gif I heard about this on the radio this morning. What's next, a tissue Paul blew his nose on? Damn, there is NO limit to the revolting things people will buy based on the Beatle connection.

Anybody who would drink the tea dregs just because Paul drank from that cup and who would want to catch the germs that made him sick is, IMHO already sick! Yeah, they need a doctor all right and it sure ain't Dr. Robert!

I think this calls for some mental revision on the part of those who want to catch germs because Paul had them. :barf4: :dead1:

And yeah, Nip, you are right. I am sorry, but this is TOTALLY sick!

i did a similar thing once...

the wallflowers (bob dylan's son Jakob's band) came to my college when they first made it big. i thought he was sooo hot and i was working the show so i just kinda followed him around all the time. anyway, just before the show, he was smoking a cig with the band...in the arena! this pissed me off so i quickly snatched it after he walked away. at first i was just going to toss it, but instead me and a friend took turns putting our lips on it so we could say we indirectly touched jakob's lips.

i kept it taped to his autograph for a long time but it got so gross that i finally tossed it.

gross, i know, but also a lot of fun!

I should hasten to add that if I am going to catch a cold from Paul, I'd rather catch it because he gave it to me DIRECTLY, thank you very much... images/icons/wink.gif

Of course, the likelihood of that eventuality is virtually nil...

beatlebangs1964
Apr 16, 2003, 11:29 AM
By all means, I'd be quite prepared for THAT evenuality! Oh, wait! George said that in AHDN! graemlins/joker.gif

Still, I would never want to catch a cold or any other malady from anybody, even a Beatle.
This is very sick indeed. I think it speaks to stalker mentality

The sick lengths folks go to for star connections...bidding on a man's germs. That is just very revolting.

I think it's somebody who thinks they're being funny or somebody who's trying to get his name in the paper (amazing! It worked!) rather than anybody who's sick or deranged, to tell you the truth. Ok, they're NOT being particularly funny, but hey.....

I'm not even going to go there with the toilet paper comment, lol! Though I do think John'd be having a really good laugh over this story!

The whole thing is disgusting, really.

Anybody who would even WANT somebody else's germs regardless of who that person might be is in dire need of mental health.

That's going a bit to far. Who would want that? i mean, paul's a nice guy and i love him to death, but really I would never want his cold germs...

Who is sicker - the one selling the germs or the folks willing to buy them?

I think the whole thing is just plain revolting.
