MACCA-nificent.

The sell-out audience at Manchester MEN Arena gave Sir Paul McCartney a standing ovation after last night's stunning three-hour show.

Fully recovered after cancelling a show in Sheffield due to a throat infection, Paul told the ECHO before the show: "I feel fine. I have had to change the set a bit but I'm up for it.

"I'm looking forward to playing and I sure am looking ahead to going down the road and playing Liverpool."

The show opened with a dance and mime piece of theatre reminiscent of the famous Venice carnivals before Paul and his four-piece band took to the stage to a backdrop of Beatle footage and multi-coloured lighting.

He sang more than 20 Beatle numbers, some, he stressed, for the first time on the tour, including Things We said Today and I've Just Seen A Face.

He covered his 40-year-career of Fab Four hits, Wings classics and his own vast back-catalogue of solo material as he stood in a red T-shirt and trademark trainers giving numerous thumbs up.

Eleanor Rigby, Here There and Everywhere and She's Leaving Home were just a few of the Beatle numbers performed to perfection as he stood in a red t-shirt and trademark trainers giving numerous thumbs ups.

He dedicated Here Today to his pal John and sang a moving tribute to George on the ukelele with the ballad Something.

Paul told anecdotes about life on the road as the hits kept on coming: Let 'Em In, Band On The Run, Live and Let Die - complete with explosions. He also dedicated My Love to Linda.

He sang a song from his Driving Rain album especially for his wife Heather who was cheering her husband on from the front rows.

But it was the Beatle songs that received the loudest applause including Hey Jude,(voted the favourite Beatles song in a poll this week), I Saw Her Standing There, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and We Can Work it Out.

He returned for an encore carrying a Union flag and sporting a land mines T-shirt.

Yesterday and a medley from Abbey Road sealed another successful show on this Back to the World Tour.

Paula Sweetman, 18, from Allerton, said: "I was too young to see him last time. So it's unforgettable for me - a Beatle singing so many Beatle songs.

"I have tickets for Earls Court next week and I'll be there when he plays his home town - it will be extra special and emotional."

McCartney resumes UK tour

Thursday, 10 April, 2003, 10:46 GMT 11:46 UK

Sir Paul McCartney resumed his UK tour in Manchester on Wednesday after cancelling Sunday's show in Sheffield due to illness.
A heavy cold caused the singer to lose his voice after the first British date of his Back In The World tour at Sheffield's Hallam Arena on Saturday.

But relieved fans at the MEN Arena were told by Sir Paul it was "good to be talking again".

Many had been anxiously waiting to see if his voice would return in time for the Manchester concert.

He told the crowd he was delighted to be touring again and playing Beatles songs that he had never played live before, including Getting Better.

Sir Paul disappointed thousands of fans in Sheffield when he held up a handwritten note saying "sorry" for cancelling Sunday's concert.

"I woke up this morning with virtually no voice. I've been doing all that I can to try and get my voice back and I tried singing a couple of numbers at a sound check this afternoon - but nothing has worked and so I am afraid I have to cancel this show in order to save the other gigs on the tour."

He added: "I'm sorry to all the people who all bought tickets for the show, at least we got to do one gig in Sheffield."

Organisers hope to reschedule the show.

This is the former Beatle's first UK tour in 10 years.

He has already taken his Back in the World tour around America, Canada, Mexico and Japan, playing 58 concerts in 37 cities.

Box office records

It broke box office records in 21 towns and McCartney has performed to more than one million people since last April.

Other UK dates include the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, on 13 and 14 April, and Earls Court, London, on 18 and 19 April.

The tour will end in the singer's home city of Liverpool with a concert at the 40,000-seater open-air Kings Dock in Liverpool on 1 June.

I was there!!! Thursday Night that was. For somebody who has had a cold and struggling to talk, his voice was fantastic. In fact it was probably the best i have heard him.
He continues to excite me. I mean the guy is a musical genius. I kept on thinking it doesnt get any better than this.
It is a night i will never forget!!!

It's true, Darny, you won't! It's 14 years since I saw Paul in concert. I can recall details like it was last week. That man puts on a fantastic show.

As a major McCartney fan, I couldn't agree more. I will move this over to Red Rose Speedway to catch more Paul fans.
