According to Abbeyrd's newspage, the Anthology DVDs have been banned in Sinagpore. Apparently all CDs and movies are subject to censorship and it will only be relased in modified form (without the "offensive" bits).

This is very sad, the thought of people being deprived of the Beatles' Anthology.

Maybe it's the drug references that they're concerned about?

They're weird in Singapore, they have all these laws that are harshly restrictive -- you can get arrested for having a piece of chewing gum on your person in Singapore, let alone actually CHEWING it!
This doesn't surprise me, it is a very restrictive society. Probably the drug reference and the sexual innuendo/references wouldn't pass muster by their censors...sigh...

I can say to you that I am from Asia, and i felt bad too to know that Singapore banned our 4 Nice Lads's Anthology.
Singapore is a very Strict Country! Rules and many Rules to obey, or else!
What our Lads did wrong? (Sex, Drugs and R&R?)

BTW, this is a little off topic but why would you get arrested for having a piece of chewing gum?!? or did i just miss the sarcasm?

It is a very restrictive place, apparently -- and that must be why they want to censor the Anthology. All those drug and sexual references! graemlins/afraid1.gif

Please don't use words like that, Beatle_soul. For one thing, that word is an insult to homosexuals, and we don't want any bashing of that sort on Beatlelinks. Besides, it's a further insult to say that they would ban Anthology.

Now I know what not to do when I go to Singapore, don't chew gum.
But that's crazy, no gum chewing in Singapore? graemlins/thinker.gif .
And no Anthology either, how can they not have the Anthology in Singapore?shakehead1:

I well remember that caning incident a few years ago. That was the first time I heard about how strict the laws were in Singapore. So I'm not really surprised about Anthology being banned there, or at least bits of it being censored out, anyroad. I only got to see it myself for the first time last weekend, because I missed the original broadcast. Thank God I have the freedom to watch the Fabs!

Imelda made sure that this was perceived as a snub, and the Beatles and their entourage were pretty much left to fend for themselves in a mob scene trying to get out of the country.
This information is in pretty much any reliable Beatles bio.

If I remember right from the Anthology, it took them a while to get onto their plane to leave the country, and once they had boarded, there was another lengthy delay--I think that's when the battle over the concert proceeds took place--before they were allowed to take off from the airport.

I remember about a year ago my friend went on a trip to Singapore and came back wearing this t-shirt with all these weird laws on the back, and the penalty for doing them. THe "Chewing Gum" one was on it! LOL. But there were other really bizzare ones, like, picking your nose in a public area is a $400 fine, being arrested for not flushing a public toilet, holding hands with a person, touching someone's left hand without asking can have assault charges...the list goes on and on. I'm not sure if some are allt hat truthful, but it amazes me how people are able to live in such a restricted environment! Poor Singaporians without Beatles...
