Thanks biglou, but am I the only who can't possibly imagine this going for $50? I bought the eight VHS set in 1996 for over $100 afterall.

Any idea what the addtional two hours features? Hopefully Real Love and I remember the Hey Bulldog footage (not done to Lady Madonna) was discovered just too late to be included in the video release. But wasn't there some story about the discovery of the earliest color footage of the Beatles appearing at the Cavern about five years ago?

I just bought a DVD player (and used it for the first time today!), so this news comes as an especially welcome treat. Thanks for posting it, biglou!

I got the VHS version (6 tapes) for $80.... and then got the DVDs for Christmas a couple years later--the DVDs (set of 2) were about $35.

Anyway, if there ARE 2 more hours of Beatles footage on those Anthology DVDs, I'm putting them on my to-buy list! images/icons/smile.gif

Yeah, this seems like a worthwhile buy -- geez, we got the VHS set as a wedding present, someone gave us a check for $80, with specific instructions to use it for the Anthology videos! But for $37.50 for the same thing on DVD, plus two hours of additional footage...I'm THERE, babe!

I think I might give my brother the VHS tapes -- he expressed a desire to see them...now's his chance if we replace the set on DVD!

I took a good look at the Amazon page...I dunno, I'm skeptical that this is actually the Anthology. It's certainly some kind of nice Beatles DVD set...but I cannot imagine they'd change the name of the item when it has been known as "The Beatles Anthology" from its first broadcast in 1995 and when the book has the same name...and when the Amazon page does not say ANYWHERE that this is the same thing that was called the Anthology when it was released as a VHS set...AND it is not being released by Apple.

Call me a skeptic, but I'm not placing any preorders yet...

To add what Susan said...IF this were the real thing, wouldn't Apple have advertised for it? Sometimes things just seem too good to be true...

Ok this is the most info I found out about the set:

This 5-disc package is a documentary made up of five one-hour episodes. It includes interviews with members of the Quarrymen, Alistair Taylor, Alf Bicknell and Julia Baird. There is no original Beatles music on this set.

From Passport Entertainment

DVDs include:

Episode 1:
There Are Places I Remember (1940-1958)

Episode 2:
One & One & One is Three (1958-1960)

Episode 3:
Hamburg & Herr Epstein

Episode 4:
Beatlemania (1963-1966)

Episode 5:
Love, Litigation & Let It Be (1967 to present)

RELEASE DATE: March 13

I Guess it's not Anthology. sorry

Nope, not Anthology -- but it does seem interesting, and might be worth buying. No original Beatles music means that this is something where they were unable to get the rights. That doesn't make it bad, btw -- the Fun With The Fab Four and Beatles Unauthorized DVDs don't have any Beatles music on them either, but they are REALLY GOOD and REALLY INTERESTING.

I'm going to reserve judgement on these -- as I said, they do sound like they could be very interesting, and might indeed be worth owning. But I'm gonna wait until they're out and maybe I can find a review or know someone who has bought them before I place my own order.

Like I mentioned, they're much more reasonably priced than the videos were. It's also nice not having to switch tapes every 50 minutes to watch the whole thing.

I also know that the more recent DVD release of P&P has behind-the-scenes interviews, etc. on it. I have the older copy that's basically just the show and a short little featurette.

"The Long and Winding Road" set is NOT the Anthology. The price gives it away. If you search Amazon, you'll find a separate (unpriced as yet) listing for The Beatles Anthology on DVD...

is this definetely the official anthology.i cant see them changing the name especially as george objected to the title because of it being the title of a paul song.just because he is dead it doesnt mean paul can do what the hell he likes.i dont think this is.the next beatle project is the get back album and dvd i was led 2 believe.also why didnt paul release 'back in the us' in europe?not out here till march.just because his last album didnt sell very well here his true fans who buy everything he releases get punished.

Just read this on Abbey Road's page:

http://abbeyrd.best.vwh.net/news/beatledvd1.jpg

Mark the date April 1 down. That's the release date for the Anthology DVDs as given to us from two sources. Pictured are promo sheets for the Anthology DVDs. Here's what the wording says:

The DVD release of "The Beatles Anthology" contains all 8 original video programs on 4 DVDs.
The picture quality has been enhanced and the audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and PCM Stereo.

First time available on DVD!
Package: Features bonus disc of more Anthology (approx 50 minutes) of rare and never before seen footage.

TV: Major direct response campaign

Press: Extensive media coverage (news specials, festivals, launch events)

Radio: Radio special tba, "win-it-before-you-can-buy-it" promotions

Marketing tools tba: sales presenter, press release and photos, EPK, merchandise, TV spots, print ads.

One source tells us the set has a suggested price of $109.98 for the 5 discs. The actual retail price will likely be closer to $89 or $99, depending on where you buy it.

Yes, the Beatles Anthology will be released this year, but not as this unofficial "Long and Winding Road" thing. In the same article in Rolling Stone that reveals the "Let it Be" DVD and de-Specterized CD, the magazine also mentions that this summer the Anthology will be available on DVD.

"The Let It Be movie will be released on DVD to accompany the new CD, although it's currently unclear whether any unreleased footage will be included. Fans can also look forward to the summer DVD release of the 1996 The Beatles Anthology documentary -- replete with unseen interview material, much of it drawing on the one occasion when McCartney, Harrison and Starr were interviewed together." --R.S.

Think about it--why on earth would they change the name? And wouldn't Capitol/Apple make a bigger fuss of this March release? Probably because it's not even from Capitol/Apple.

I saw the special on it(The Long & Winding Road) on Muchmusic but it may have been a shortened version (I don't know though) it was only 5 hours long in total, had mostly comments from people who were either associated with or friends of The Beatles, and prettty much rushed through their entire career and breakup. There were some comments from The Beatles themselves but mostly those of others. It did have a nice little bit at the end with people talking about how the deaths of John and George affected them though.

Judged by what I saw, I probably won't get it unless the released DVD has quite a bit more than this 5 hour footage!

This is SO exciting! I've only ever seen the TV version, and have been kicking myself for the last few years for not buying the set when it first came out. So are we going to have the Anthology, LIB film, and LIB album out all this Spring and Summer? If so all I can say is I'm glad by birthday is in August! graemlins/smile1.gif

I haven't bought the Anthology yet because I was waiting for it to come out on DVD, and now it is! Yea!
This has been such an exciting year for Beatle releases! With A Hard Day's Night re-released in October, Brainwashed & Back in the U.S. released in November, and now the Anthology and Let it Be (how it was supposed to be) coming out later this year! I can't wait! You'd better bet I'll be buying both the dvd set of the anthology and the new LIB cd & dvd! graemlins/thumbsup2.gif
