John Lennon - singer, guitarist, songwriter, working-class hero, millionaire, would-be revolutionary, lightning rod for controversy, family man, murder victim.
Twenty-two years after the ex-Beatle was shot dead in New York City, his music and lifestyle continue to fascinate, baffle, challenge and frustrate fans.
Lacking the melodic skills and the political savvy of any number of other writers, Lennon released a series of records driven mainly by his own corrosive honesty. (The definitive Lennon song title: "Gimme Some Truth," from 1971's "Imagine" album.)
It will always be fascinating to wonder about the music Lennon might have made, or the acid comments he might have made about, say, the Spice Girls. Instead, we'll have to visit these sites and, well, imagine...
www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/lennon1.html (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/lennon1.html) - It's a well-known fact that the FBI shadowed Lennon and Yoko Ono in the early '70s, looking for ways to drive the left-wing couple out of the United States. This site includes 10 pages of FBI documents from 1971-72, including a memo urging that Lennon be "arrested if at all possible" on drug charges so he would "become more likely to be immediately deportable." (Another memo included descriptive information and a photograph of Lennon, presumably to aid FBI agents who wouldn't have recognized one of the world's best-known performers.)
espn.go.com/abcsports/mnf/mnfclassics/ - John Lennon and Howard Cosell? An odd couple, to be sure. But on Dec. 10, 1973, the ex-Beatle sat with the toupeed, bombastic sportscaster for a brief interview during a "Monday Night Football" game in Los Angeles. See a short, entertaining clip here in which Lennon discusses Beatles reunions and his reaction to pro football. ("It makes rock concerts look like tea parties.")
www.liverpooljohnlennonairport.com/html/index2.html (http://www.liverpooljohnlennonairport.com/html/index2.html) - Lucy in the sky with... 747s? Apparently that's the case in Lennon's hometown of Liverpool, which renamed its airport after its fallen favorite son this past summer. Check out this page for pictures and all the usual stuff you find on airport Web sites. (Since George Harrison's dad was a bus driver, maybe Liverpool's public transit terminal is next in line for renaming?)
triumphpc.com/johnlennon/ - Now, this is bizarre. This page is home to the "John Lennon Artificial Intelligence Project," supposedly an artificial-intelligence engine that uses Lennon's words and thoughts to generate "answers" to questions. We have no idea whether "talking" with the artificial John is anything like talking with the real one (it doesn't say "fook" nearly enough, for starters) ... but, since Lennon was fond of pointless high-tech gadgets, he might have enjoyed taking this for a spin.
www.anomalist.com/reports/lennon.html (http://www.anomalist.com/reports/lennon.html) - No, this is bizarre. A pair of psychics from North Dakota claim to have channeled 17 original songs sent from John Lennon from beyond the grave. This is a story about them. All we can say is... well, hopefully they'll get in touch with Boxcar Willie soon.
www.guterman.net/lennon (http://www.guterman.net/lennon) - What if John Lennon had lived? Everyone has a theory, and one Jeffrey Guterman extends an interesting one here. In his version of events, John F. Kennedy is not shot; a non-grieving America does not fall hard for the Beatles, who are popular but not hugely so; the Fab Four regroup for a show in 1989; and a different member of the band is killed by a crazed assassin.
