Actually, they're showing up on AMERICAN DREAMS; apparently Dick Clark isn't going to let a little thing like history stand in the way of his show's success...

Beatle booking?
In their 'Dreams'
By STEPHEN BATTAGLIO
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
The Beatles were one of the few superstar music acts to never appear on "American Bandstand."
But that won't keep the group from playing on "American Dreams," the NBC drama that uses the classic dance show to tell stories about a Philadelphia family in the 1960s.
"American Dreams" creator and executive producer Jonathan Prince told the Daily News a clip of the Beatles' historic first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1964 will be in a January episode.
Footage of big-name '60s music acts has helped make "American Dreams" a Sunday night hit.
Up to now, the series has drawn performances from the "Bandstand" archives owned by Dick Clark, an executive producer of "American Dreams."
"You can't tell this story without telling the story of the Beatles," Prince said.
To get the "Sullivan" footage, Prince said he had to make a pitch to Apple Corp., the company that manages Beatles-related business for the group's former members and their estates.
Prince convinced Apple that the clip would introduce the group's music to younger viewers.
"We said there will be a new base of fans - and we must reward our other fans who are expecting this to happen," Prince said.
The effort to keep it real musically on "American Dreams" has paid off.
Stacey Lynn Koerner, an analyst for ad-buying firm Initiative Media, said the show has tapped into the public's nostalgic yearnings after last year's terrorist attacks - even though it deals with the turbulent '60s.
"It represents all of the themes that really came out of that post-9/11 experience - more concentration on family, a celebration of American pop culture in 'Bandstand,' and a harking back to a more innocent time," she said.
But the show has also become an outlet for contemporary artists. Usher recently played Motown legend Marvin Gaye. The upcoming Christmas episode features Ashanti as Dionne Warwick.
Soon "American Dreams" fans will be able to listen to those performances anytime - NBC is working on a deal to release a CD next year. A DVD of the series with uncut musical performances could follow.
More of today's music stars are being lined up for "American Dreams," said Prince, who believes they give the show its cross-generational appeal.
"A lot of kids will say, 'That's Ashanti,'" he said. "And the parents will say, 'That's Dionne Warwick. Who's Ashanti?'"

I watch this show every week and I wondered how or even if they would put the Beatles in the story line. Dick Clark likes to take creative license in his version of things. It's still supposedly 1963 on the show, but Jay & the Americans have already been on. I still watch anyway!

Yeah, I've counted quite a few British Invasion songs being played on the show already, even though it's only around December 1963 in the plotline. I think it's a great show, though, one of the few I'll actually make time to watch.
I've been looking forward to seeing how they'll handle the whole Beatle thing since the show premiered. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

It's great they're including the Beatles (I was wondering how they were going to do that). I watch this show every week and enjoye it. It's a breath of fresh air from the stuff that's been on TV lately.

The big unanswered question, of course, is are they going to cast someone as the Beatles for some scenes, much the same way Usher played Marvin Gaye, and if they do who will they choose? They may well use the footage the same way Bob Zemeckis blocked his shots in I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND, which in the end makes the speculation pointless, but if anyone has some candidates, now's the time to speak up...

Cool, I'd been wondering if the Beatles were going to be included in the show. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif
I've never seen "American Dreams," so are they saying that they're going to pretend that the Ed Sullivan footage actually took place on "American Bandstand?" Or will, say, the family be watching the Ed Sullivan show on TV at home? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/confused.gif I think it would make a lot more sense that way.

They can't mess with it *too* much, or there would be thousands of Beatle fans crying foul over any kind of major historical inaccuracies.
I think it'd be fun, though, if Meg and Roxanne (the two teenage girl characters on the show) were in NYC for whatever reason at the same time the Beatles were there, kind of like in the "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" movie.
Anyone else have any plotline suggestions for that episode?

You know, with TV technology these days they could turn ol' Ed Sullivan into Dick Clark EASY... would be interesting.
As far as a plot line, I can't help but think that (as i mentioned earlier) the father character is going to have some fit about their hair- might be a bit too cliche though.

Well I just read that the Beatle episode will not be aired until Jan. 5 now, so that's a couple of weeks late. Anyways, this doesn't say much, but here's a brief outline of the plot:
BEATLEMANIA GRIPS THE PRYOR HOUSEHOLD AS JJ FACES A DIFFICULT DECISION - The Beatles' arrival in America sends the country and the Pryor household into a frenzy, except for a concerned JJ (Will Estes), who receives word that Notre Dame has denied him a full scholarship. Determined to afford his son's college education, Jack (Tom Verica) seeks financial help from his successful and slightly distant older brother Ted (guest star Christopher Cousins) despite Pete (guest star Matthew John Armstrong ) and Helen's (Gail O'Grady) concerns. Meanwhile, a confused Meg (Brittany Snow) attempts to classify her relationship with Luke (guest star Jamie Elman ), employing Roxanne's (Vanessa Lengies) "perfect plan" to determine if the record store clerk is in fact her boyfriend.
It doesn't say too much about how the Beatles will be incorporated, oh well. It will be a surprise I guess!
Thanks for sharing, Sexy_Sadie (the latest and the greatest of them all!). I know I for one will be on the lookout for the Beatlemania episode. I have been watching Ameican Dreams since its premiere, and I've wondered since then how they would fit the Fabs in. I think it's a good show.

hey everyone! The Bealtemania episode of American Dreams WILL air on January 5, 2003. It will play a mjor part in that episode. Everyone in the cast will be dancing to "I Want To Hold Your Hand." They will play that song on American Bandstand too. There will also be vintage footage of the Beatle's when they come to America for the first time. Everyone get your video recorderd ready!!!
I suppose everybody should tune in on both December 22 and January 5, since we've heard conflicting dates...

I saw this Sunday's preview for the Beatlemania episode and they did not say "coming next week." They said "on the next all-new episode of American Dreams." Which can be anytime, not necessarily the next week.
According to TVGuide.com, the episode for 12/29 is this one:
The Fighting Irish
A Notre Dame recruiter is interested in JJ, but he's preoccupied with Beth, so Jack will have to carry the ball for his son. And Jimmy Riley asks Meg to be his regular partner on “Bandstand.” This could be the start of something big. As Roxanne puts it, “Jimmy Riley has been blessed with one of the great pickup lines of our time---Will you dance with me on 'Bandstand'?---and he's not going to waste it on somebody he isn't crazy about.” Meanwhile, Patty wants her parents to buy a bigger water heater (and she annoys everyone about it); and Helen goes to the Women's Health Clinic at Temple to get birth-control pills.
Is anyone but me getting annoyed with some of the aspects with this show? I can't stand the father, Patty, and all the tension between the characters. And I really didn't like the double standard for JJ and Meg. JJ can go out and spend the night with a questionable older woman while Meg can't go on a simple date with a guy who's very respectible? Come on! I realize the '60s were different than now, but you can't tell me all fathers were that much of a jerk. And don't get me started on the pronunciation of the words "Notre Dame". It's No-tra Dahme! Didn't anyone take French???
At least the music's good. And it's getting a whole lot better come January. images/icons/smile.gif

The date inaccuracies and that poopy Patty annoy me. I can't stand Patty. graemlins/thumbsdown.gif I also think the sexist father is aptly named "Jack" as a nickname for "Jackass" because he makes Archie Bunker sound reasonable at times. What a donkey.
I also don't like the way the powers that be mess with history and alter it to shape their story line. For the most part I like the show, but those are my pet peeves.

So far the show has been *okay* regarding this, but I can definitely see how it can go downhill.
The tension between the characters...well, every family has conflict. Patty is becoming WAY too bratty, it seems, though; I don't like one-dimensional characters like that. (And I KNOW BB can't STAND Patty, either!)
And re: the No-tra Dahme/Note-er Dayme pronunciation... Anytime anyone I know has talked about the college, we've always said "Note-er Dayme". The cathedral in France is Notra Dahme. images/icons/smile.gif
The music on the show is very good--but in just about every episode so far I've caught slip-ups, where they've played songs that didn't come out until 1964 or even 1965! The casual viewer probably doesn't pick up on it, but any oldies experts (like me) go crazy about stupid things like that!

I wish they'd show more of young Will's character (the little boy with polio). I didn't even know he had polio until I read it in the newspaper about the show and the characters. My dad did notice he had a leg brace on, and I thought that maybe he did have polio, but I wasn't sure until I read that article. They should say something about that. Will also walks with a limp too. And Patty? Very one-dimensional (a spelling-bee champion--whoopee!) and I wasn't too sure about the double-standard thing between Meg and JJ either. Well, the sexual revolution is a few years away (on the show). images/icons/smile.gif Oh yeah, the songs...some of them, I'm sure came out in 1964! LIke Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By" for instance.
And can't they find people who actually try to sound like the real singer?

Apparently they don't have to sound anything like the '60s star they're portraying, which is kind of crummy.

"Walk on By," which I never liked was 1965. The time inconsistencies and inaccuracies are enough to make one graemlins/scream2.gif !

This business of bringing on those young singers to attract a younger audience - that's Dick Clark for ya! I have not heard of these newer artists - and what do they have in common with the artists they're mimicking? And what kind of interest do kids today have in this show? The sixties were centuries ago to them! JMO
