Beatles' 'Let It Be' tops list of not quite hits
The Beatles' final single Let It Be has been named the greatest chart-topper that never was.
The song, held off the prime spot by Lee Marvin's Wand'rin' Star, has topped a poll of the best songs which were denied the number one spot.
Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds was the next greatest number two track, according to a study by the Music Choice TV channel.
The song was pipped to number one by Rolf Harris's sentimental tune Two Little Boys, recently performed on Stars In Their Eyes by Pulp's Jarvis Cocker.
Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones at number five in the list was kept off by Dawn's Knock Three Times in 1971. And Oasis's Wonderwall - ranked third best runner-up - was beaten into second place by Robson And Jerome's Up On The Roof in 1995.
It is the 50th anniversary of the charts this week. Many of the number twos chosen in the poll are arguably better known and better loved than the songs which deprived them of the glory spot.
Here is the full "top 10" list of the nation's favourite number twos (tracks that held them off and year in brackets).: 1. The Beatles - Let it Be (Lee Marvin - Wand'rin' Star, 1970); 2. Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds (Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys, 1969); 3. Oasis - Wonderwall (Robson & Jerome - Up On The Roof, 1995); 4. Elton John - Rocket Man (T-Rex - Metal Guru, 1977). 5. Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar (Dawn - Knock Three Times, 1971). 6. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows (The Beatles - Yellow Submarine, 1966). 7. The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony (Puff Daddy/Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You, 1997). 8. The Who - My Generation (The Seekers - Carnival Is Over, 1965). 9. Pulp - Common People (Robson & Jerome - Unchained Melody, 1995). 10. The Jacksons - I Want You Back (Lee Marvin - Wand'rin' Star, 1970).

As a person who has HEARD Lee Marvin sing, may I say, oh my God. I can't believe that his record did better than LET IT BE.
Wand'rin Star is a nice song, probably the best one in Paint Your Wagon (with the possible exception of I Talk To The Trees), but please! This just doesn't seem possible to me.

Didn't Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane get stuck at #2 also? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thinker.gif Or am I mistaken? I wonder which song kept that one off the top spot!

It's funny that "Yellow Sub" kept "God Only Knows" (a terrific song!) out of the #1 spot. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/shakehead1.gif Thanks for the article!

Thanks for the article, Siobhan. "Let It Be" is my favorite song by the Beatles. Though it didn't make it to #1 in the UK, it was #1 in the US for two weeks.

Oasis tops Elton John? What's wrong with this picture? Sure, Oasis had its merrits. But over Elton John? Come on, now!

6.) Beach Boys--God Only Knows

I LOVE this song. I sang it in high school as part of a six voice acapella jazz choir. This song moves me in so many ways! The only thing I can accept about this not going number one is that it was held off by a Beatles song.

I laughed out loud to read Oasis beaten to the top spot by those hacks Robson and Jerome. Amen to that I say. Oasis are the most derivative bunch of contrived nonentities since The Knack and My Sharona.
