Yeah, I am with tax and Rell on this. The Beatles are head and shoulders above the crowd! They are timeless!

Oh I will remember Mariah http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/afraid1.gif Carey alright, as the lady who shouted her way through so many original beautiful songs like Without You. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/scream3.gifhttp://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/scream3.gif

Garth is ok...for a country singer. But #1? C'MON! Honestly, I don't understand the appeal of anyone on this list except for ...guess who? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink3.gif

I could see the appeal of Garth Brooks. There's this tendency a lot of people had before Soundscan came along that country was a limited appeal genre which Garth Brooks and a lot of other country acts dispelled. Besides, Beatle fans can't really dismiss the genre out of hand; where would they have been without Carl Perkins to emulate? And who can forget that it was country legend Buck Owens that wrote "Act Naturally"?
And in answer to an earlier question, Soundscan covers sales figures in the United States. Worldwide, the list might have a few differences, although in any combination the Beatles would still outsell Mariah. (Just one more thing to make her head for that nice padded little room up she went to...)

Well, if anything, let's see the CD sales numbers for those other acts 30 years after *they* no longer exist as a band (or stop performing, for the solo artists). I doubt they'll compare to the Beatles' sales numbers today.

And JD. I said Garth was "ok", even though country music isn't my bag, man http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif. Truly, he's about the only country singer I can tolerate hearing; he has a nice voice (and he's cute!). I can see how he'd be country music's answer to Elvis. But to be ranked so highly? Am I missing something? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/lookaround.gif Hmmm..perhaps.

The top 5 bestselling acts in the period 1991-2002 according to Soundscan:
1 Garth Brooks (64.35 million)
2 The Beatles (42.6 million)
3 Mariah Carey (40.49 million)
4 Metallica (40.21 million)
5 Celine Dion (39.17 million)
The figure to the end of 1999 was 30,2m., so they sold 12,4 million albums in a little over 2 years! Incredible for a group, which disbanded more than 30 years ago.

Garth Brooks? I don't know about that but well done to The Beatles considering the Fab Four haven't recorded together since 1969.

Oh GAWD! Her version of "Without You" is just awful! She surely butchered a classic Harry Nilsson song!

I think, for a band that broke up 30 years ago, the top 20 woulda been pretty dang good- there's no shame in #2 on a list like that.
and I was thinking: can you imagine how many *they won't last 6-months* anti-Beatles-adults from the '60s would have had a heart attack after seeing a list like that?

I agree, he (and the dixie chicks) are the only modern country i can listen too (its not really my bag either). Its concievable since Garth's been pretty big throughout the entire decade. plus, on a side-note, he seems like a nice guy, good music, talented, and by all accounts he's a Beatle fan. That's good enough for me.

That`s right. To think A hard day`s night was a low budget movie `cause nobody thought The Beatles would last that long!

Yes, I want to be far away from her and withour her. Harry's version of this Badfinger tune - which in fact was quite different than Harry's - is an everlasting beauty for the good reasons.

I'm no Mariah fan. Ten years ago, I admit I just thought all she did were tired J5 remakes. I am not a fan of hers. I hate the 1996 song "Always Be My Baby" because I didn't like all that lingering. I think "linger" is a nasty, vile sounding word.
