Late George Harrison to Be Honored

LONDON (AP) -- George Harrison will be honored at a film ceremony next week for his work as a producer of independent movies.

The late Beatles guitarist, who died last year at 58, financed a string of low-budget hits. His contribution to the nation's movie industry will be remembered with a lifetime achievement award at the British Independent Film Awards in London on Oct. 30, officials said Thursday.

Movies financed by his company, Handmade Films, include "Life of Brian," "Time Bandits" and "Withnail and I."

This year's nominees for best British independent film are "Bend It Like Beckham," "Bloody Sunday," "The Lawless Heart," "Morvern Callar" and "Sweet Sixteen."

This is from Reuters;

Irish actor Richard Harris and Beatles star George Harrison both won posthumous honors at a film awards ceremony in London Wednesday.

Harris, who died aged 72 last Friday, was given a special prize for Outstanding Contribution by an Actor at the British Independent Film Awards in remembrance of his long movie career.

Twice married, twice bankrupt and a firm believer in living life to the full, Harris was twice nominated for Oscars. He appeared in over 70 films, including "Camelot" and "Gladiator."

Most recently Harris won a new generation of young fans playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films.

Harris had also been nominated for Best Actor for his role as a King Lear-like gangland boss in Liverpool drama "The Kingdom."

Harrison, who died in November last year aged 58 after a long battle with cancer, received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his efforts with independent film.

His film company, Handmade Films, made a number of critically acclaimed films in the late 1970s and 1980s such as Monty Python's "Life of Brian," "The Long Good Friday" and "Withnail and I."

The Best Actor prize went to James Nesbitt for his portrayal of a march organizer in "Bloody Sunday," a re-enactment of Northern Ireland's 1972 civil rights protest in which 14 were shot dead.

"Bloody Sunday" also won Paul Greengrass the prize for Best Director.

Ken Loach's "Sweet Sixteen" was awarded Best Independent British Film and Samantha Morton was named Best Actress for Scottish literary drama "Morvern Callar."

That's really nice of them! I think George would've been pleased to be appreciated in some other sense, other than just music. Still, I believe any award would've been unnecessary to him, personally.
