August 6, 2002 -- ALBANY - John Lennon's killer will come up for parole in October for a second time, The Post has learned.
***, serving 20 years to life in upstate Attica prison, was denied early release two years ago.
And experts say his chances haven't improved much in the past two years, despite a clean prison record.
Parole Division spokesman Tom Grant said *'s hearing will likely be held the second week of October.

From what I understand, he's going to come up for parole every two years. I doubt he'll ever get it, though, especially as long as Yoko's around to protest. It would be a death sentence to release him, anyway.
Thanks for posting this, lucyinthesky. Mind if I ask a favor? There are people in this forum who really can't stand seeing Beatle Enemy #1's name. For their sake, could you please edit it out of your post? Thanks.

Can I ask a question about this? I'm not trying to be argumentative or contentious, I'm just seriously curious about this. Why exactly does seeing his name upset some people? I've asked this before and the response I was given was "using his name gives him too much power". I don't understand how using someone's name gives them more power....in a way, it seems that using a nickname or some euphemism gives him more power. I mean, who sounds more powerful, "Bruce Wayne" or "Batman"? "John Smith" or "He Who Shall Remain Nameless"?
I'm really curious about this. Can someone help me understand? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I don't personally have a prob with it, but I know http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cat.gif for one is subject to the old superstition that one's name is one's essence - ergo, by proclaiming someone's name, you are affirming their existence.
Ever see the TV version of Merlin? He ended up by not using magic to defeat Queen Mab, but merely choosing to ignore her and forget her made her disappear into nothingness.
Rather silly as far as I'm concerned, but there you go...

For me, it's not actually his name that's the problem, it's the acknowledgement of him in any capacity.
I feel that by just not mentioning him, he's unimportant. Why talk about someone you'd rather not discuss?
And FYI, for those who are curious -- because I KNOW this will turn into a "how dare they let him out" discussion -- the odds of him being paroled are slim to none. The thing is, he committed his crime at a time when the death penalty and life without parole were not on the books in New York State, and so he is subject to the laws that were in place in 1980. At the time, the maximum sentence he could receive was 20 years to life. Which means that after 20 years was served, he had the right to a parole HEARING, and has the right to another HEARING every two years thereafter.
A parole HEARING is NOT parole. It is an opportunity to go before the state parole board and present reasons for release. But since they allow victim impact statements at parole hearings, and since I am sure Yoko will give one every year -- and also since, frankly, releasing him will probably just cause people to line up to want to kill him -- the odds of release for this particular prisoner are slim to none. But unfortunately, we do have to hear about his parole hearings every two years now...sigh...

With Yoko around I don't think that he will get his parole, but it's going to get tiresome having him coming up for his hearing every two years.

Thanks, Lucy, for the post. It lets us know what is up and those in NY, maybe a protest, if necessary?
Rell, I think I can explain. The original motivation behind the crime was that this "devil's best friend" wanted his name in the history books. He wanted to be famous. By not using his name, we help deny him that.

I really don't think he'll ever get out. At least not until he's an old, old man. My greatest fear is that some Beatle fan out there, will attack him. I don't want the chain to continue. I don't believe that John would want it to either.
Still, every two years... yes, this is going to get old. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/sad1.gif

Hmmm. Interesting. However, I still don't see some 20th century historian sitting down to pen a tome about popular culture in the 80's and calling him by some pseudonym so that his name doesn't get in the history books. Anyway, I'll shut up about this now. Some things I am not meant to understand! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Well like everyone here I hope he doesn't get parole, but it makes you wish there was a way that they wouldn't have to give him a parole hearing every 2 years, then we wouldn't have to hear/think/worry about it

No such luck, that's the law. Unfortunately.
And a protest is pointless...he's up at Attica, near Buffalo, and they don't allow that kind of thing. Besides, he's NOT GONNA GET OUT, believe me.

Susan's right. There's no way that anyone with half a brain would ever let him out. He's a mentally ill man and they know that. It's still kind of freaky to think that there may even be the smallest chance that he may get out. But he won't. There's no way. His release would not only be harmful to society, but to him himself. Can you imagine what would happen to him???

Historian will use ******'s name as they should. But for those of us that love the Beatles we will not give the recognition of fame that the bastard who killed John sought.

Sleepy mentioned it earlier. I will never utter his name for the rest of my life. I personally do not acknowledge his existence, nor do I write/read his name. He is truly the "devil's best friend" for what he did. I know we are suppose to forgive and forget, but somehow I can't bring myself to do so.

Just like for Charles Manson, these parole hearings will continue come up. Not likely they'll ever release these lunatics.

I've read newspapers and even encyclopedia articles that refer to him as "a demented fan" or something like that.
As for my own opinion about using his name, I've actually used it in my fan fiction when the story required it, but I still flinch when I hear the last name, no matter whether it's referring to him or someone else. Could just be hearing it in a situation where I don't expect to hear it, I guess.

Aren't you acknowledging his existence just by writing that sentence? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/confused.gif
I just want to make something clear on this subject, by the way. Just because I don't understand the need to censor his name doesn't mean I've either forgiven or forgotten what he did, and I doubt I ever will. Just wanted to make that point.

I think everyone here is in agreement about the Jerk of Jerks. His parole hearings are just a legal formality, but I sincerely doubt he will ever be turned loose on humanity again.
In recent years, Yoko implored the powers that be to keep the Jerk of Jerks behind bars and not to sic him on the public at large.

He shouldn't even bother going through the process of the parole hearing....he won't be going anywhere.
And yeah I agree that one day when he finally does get out, he will wish he stayted put.

It's NOT a matter of "bothering" to go through anything -- it's the LAW! I'm as unhappy about this as every other Beatles fan, I think it sucks -- but it's not up to US, it's not even up to HIM...IT'S THE LAW IN NEW YORK STATE. He is ENTITLED to a hearing every two years. And so he will HAVE one. But we should all rest assured that he's probably gonna spend the rest of his miserable life in prison -- just like Charles Manson and Sirhan Sirhan.

I'm with you, kat. I know two murderers whose names I'll never say, and the Jerk of all jerks is one of them. It's just an emotional response on my part. I find it offensive just reading their names, and I'm grateful people are blocking out the name of John's murderer. I thank you for your consideration.

To me, a name is only a way of addressing somebody. To utilize his is not granting his wish or any other argument that anyone may use. As stated before, I agree that not using his name grants him the enigma and legendary status that he may have sought to gain. Adolf Hitler, Atilla the Hun, Ivan the Terrible, and Albert Fish's names are all used freely in conversation without censorship, and although I am not in any way sugar-coating the actions of Chapman, I simply cannot agree that his offense was worse than those of those mentioned above.
