Sir Paul's daughter Stella was said to be expecting her first child yesterday - just 48 hours after rumours that she is about to marry.
Tuesday saw the first reports that the 30-year- old Gucci fashion designer's boyfriend, Alasdhair Willis, had proposed.
Those close to the couple said they were planning a swift wedding.
Then yesterday a friend claimed: 'There is a dot- dot- dot to the engagement story. Rumour is that Stella's pregnant.'
Friends said Miss McCartney has been broody for months and that those feelings grew when she threw a recent baby shower for several pregnant friends.
She met 31-year-old Mr Willis, former publisher of the style magazine Wallpaper, at a fashion party last summer. They have been dating ever since.
Miss McCartney's spokesman refused to confirm rumours of her pregnancy yesterday.
Her boyfriend's parents were not able to help either.
Mr Willis - nicknamed Mr Gucci because of his famous lover - fuelled the rumours by hosting a celebratory lunch for his former Wallpaper colleagues at the Casa Frattini restaurant near Miss McCartney's West London home.
He insisted, however, that the party was purely to mark his departure from his £75,000-a-year job at the magazine and refused to be drawn on the subjects of fatherhood or marriage.
Miss McCartney was not at the lunch.
She is believed to be working in the U.S.
