Paul McCartney’s Former 1965 Radford Mini Cooper S to Change Hands With a Little Help From Bonhams
SAN FRANCISCO – The craze over the Mini Cooper will take a lustful twist this August as Bonhams auctions a truly unique example – Paul McCartney's former 1965 Mini Cooper S – at its 5th annual Quail Lodge Sale. Mini enthusiasts and Beatles collectors will have the rare opportunity to bid on this fully restored little beauty when the sale commences on August 17 at 5 p.m. in Carmel Valley, Calif.
McCartney used the vehicle as his daily driver during the Beatles' formative years in London from 1965 to 1970 and was often pictured in this car on his own and with his late wife Linda. According to the book "Many Years From Now," the first night Paul and Linda met, they went back to Paul’s house in this particular Mini.
“We are eager to see how collectors respond to a vehicle with such a storied celebrity heritage, especially with all the buzz surrounding the re-introduction of the new Mini Cooper and McCartney’s current U.S. tour,” says Mark Osborne, vice president of Bonhams.
Complementing the Mini is a remarkable selection of Mercedes-Benz models from the late Hollywood entertainer Don Ricardo’s private collection. Offered for sale for the first time, one of the highlights is the ultra rare, aluminum-bodied 1955 300SL Gullwing that Ricardo drove to a class record at the Bonneville National Speed Trials in 1967. This historic Gullwing is estimated to attract bids between $800,000 and $1.2 million.
Other superb models from his collection going under the hammer include a 1923 Mercedes-Benz Targa Florio, a 1928 Mercedes-Benz SS/SSK Sports Tourer, a one-of-a-kind 1911 Benz Victoria Touring Car and a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 600 Short Wheelbase Saloon.
More than 70 motorcars in all and nearly 300 lots of hard-to-find automobilia will cross the block during the sale, which has quickly emerged as a staple of America's premier historic motoring weekend that is annually held on the Monterey, Calif., Peninsula. The Bonhams sale annually attracts serious collectors and enthusiasts from around the world.
Admission to the Bonhams Quail Lodge Sale is $70, which admits two guests and includes registration for the sale and a handsome collector’s catalogue. Interested parties are invited for viewing on Thursday, Aug. 15; Friday, Aug. 16; and prior to the sale on Saturday, Aug. 17. Telephone bids are also accepted.
