LONDON (AP) - Elvis Presley returned to the top of the singles charts in Britain on Monday, rewriting pop history 25 years after his death and passing The Beatles as the artist with the most No. 1 tunes.

The King now has more No. 1 recordings than any artist in the pop chart's 50-year history, thanks to a remix of the little-known song "A Little Less Conversation."

By reaching the top of the singles charts in England, Presley gained his 18th No. 1 tune, breaking the record that he had held in Britain with The Beatles at 17 each.

"A Little Less Conversation" was written by Mac Davis and Billy Strange for the 1968 film "Live a Little, Love a Little." The original also was on the soundtrack of the 2001 movie "Ocean's Eleven."

Dutch musician Tom Holkenburg, known in Europe as the disc jockey of the techno-group Junkie XL, recently remixed the song for a Nike World Cup TV commercial featuring a British player. Although a contemporary remix, "Elvis vs. JXL - a Little Less Conversation" leaves Presley's distinctive vocals intact.

The single, released throughout Europe last week, sold more than 67,000 copies in Britain on the very first day.

Junkie XL was changed to JXL for the song because the Presley estate did not want the track remixed if the name contained what could be perceived as a reference to drugs.

JXL's track will be released in the United States on June 25.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Presley's death. He died at his home in Memphis, Tenn., on Aug. 16, 1977 at age 42.

Gee I guess a remix of a Beatles song will have to strike him down on the British charts

------------------
One of my great memories of John is from when we were having some argument. I was disagreeing and we were calling each other names. We let it settle for a second and then he lowered his glasses and he said: "It's only me." And then he put his glasses back on again. To me, that was John. Those were the moments when I actually saw him without the facade, the armor, which I loved as well, like anyone else. It was a beautiful suit of armor. But it was wonderful when he let the visor down and you'd just see the John Lennon that he was frightened to reveal to the world."

A friend read me an article on this.

I think I ought to remix a Beatles song that wasn't all that popular and make it a hit in England even the score. The only problem is getting the money for the mixing board, the rights to the song, and the guts to mess with perfection.

The remix of this song was not that instrumental in making it a No. 1 hit. It was its inclusion in the Nike World Cup TV ad, which airs around Europe since late April every day at least once per hour on many TV stations.

This TV spot has a huge number of big soccer stars taking a role, and the lead role is played by Eric Cantona, a Frenchman who is extremely popular in the UK (he played for Manchester United for 6 years).

When one looks at the cover of the single, there is no picture of Elvis to be found there, which is very odd, as this may be the first time ever that RCA/BMG release an Elvis record WITHOUT the usual Elvis picture on cover...

This shows that the people that bought this single couldn`t care less about this being an Elvis tune or whatever, the Nike ad was the decisive thing (it is also mentioned on the cover of the single).

Thus it would not be enough to just remix a Beatles song to get it to No. 1, it would have to be featured in a Nike World Cup TV ad...the next World Cup is in 2006, I hope Nike will consider using a Beatles tune that time.

On Sunday 16, the remix of "A Little Less Conversation" by Elvis Presley has become the UK`s No. 1 selling single. It has been Presley`s 18th UK No. 1 hit, topping the record 17th of the Beatles. At least it seems so. The Elvis propagandists are already in jubilant mood, although they have no real reason for this. Here`s why:

01)One of the Beatles` earliest hits - Please Please Me - reached the No. 1 position in the charts of the three major UK trade publications of the 1960s: New Musical Express, Melody Maker & Disc. The only chart were it stalled at No. 2 was the Record Retailer`s. Back in the 1960s, the most well-known UK chart was that of the NME (together with that of the BBC, which averaged all four UK major charts). The Record Retailer chart was far lesser known than that of the NME or the Melody Maker. Most people that remember the 1960s UK pop scene will agree that Please Please Me was generally considered to be the Beatles` first UK No. 1. There can be no doubt that Please Please Me deserves to be considered a UK No. 1 hit single. Three charts out of four can`t be wrong. In 1969, however, the BBC began to use the Record Retailer chart, from then on it was considered to be the "official" UK chart. This urged the makers of "The Guinness Book Of UK Hit Singles" to consider the RR chart as their source not only since 1969, but for the whole of the 1960s right from the start in 1960. This - in retrospect - meant that those charts that were recognized by the music-interested public of the 1960s (namely the NME, Melody Maker & BBC charts) were replaced by a far lesser recognized chart - the Record Retailer chart (a chart that was mainly compiled for the industry, not the public).

In the NME chart, Elvis Presley had 17 No. 1 hits, while the Beatles had 18. It is thus a bit unfair by the UK media to trumpet how "Elvis beats the Beatles" etc., as the Beatles virtually got "robbed" of their first UK No. 1 by the makers of the Guinness Book! Given all the hype that is certain to follow Presley`s 18th UK No. 1 next week, it should at least be noted that the Beatles actually already had 18 UK No. 1 hits (in most charts).

Apart from the Please Please Me situation, some other things should also be taken into consideration:

02) Elvis Presley released some 96 singles and EPs in the UK from 1956 to 1977. Of these 96 releases, the incredibly low number of only 17 reached the No. 1 position. The Beatles, on the other hand, reached the No. 1 spot in the UK 17 times (or 18 times) out of 25 released singles and EPs (from 1962 to 1970). This means that 68 % of the Beatles` singles were No. 1 hits, while only 18 % of Presley`s singles managed this feat.

Anybody who constructs an "Elvis beats the Beatles" scenario out of Presley`s 18th UK No. 1 surely is stretching it a bit, I think.

03) The Beatles` Magical Mystery Tour EP was prevented from reaching No. 1 in 1967 by the Beatles` own Hello Goodbye single. The Beatles thus held the No. 1 and No. 2 spot in the singles chart at once. This is an incredible achievement, which tells something about the Beatles` popularity. Unfortunately, MMT was not able to topple Hello Goodbye - if it had done this, the Beatles would have had 18 (or 19) UK No. 1 hits. Thus the Beatles had in fact kept themselves from having another UK No. 1 hit. The same can`t be said of Elvis.

Apart from the above three points, it is also notable that the Beatles outperform Elvis in the major American music charts in terms of No. 1 hits, be it Billboard, Cash Box, or Record World. And all this in a much shorter period than Elvis` career.

The Beatles are also superior to Elvis in any LP chart that one can find. 19 Billboard US No. 1 LPs (compared to Presley`s 9), 15 UK No. 1 LPs (compared to Presley`s 6).

Apart from the US and the UK, the Beatles also outperform Elvis in such international markets as Germany (12 No. 1 hits for the Beatles, only one for Elvis - chart started in 1956), Australia (23 vs. 11, chart since 1956), Canada (22 vs. 19, since 1957), Holland (22 vs. 2, since 1958), Austria (7 vs. 2, since 1957), Switzerland (6 vs. none, since 1968), Italy (4 vs. 1, since 1957).

The Beatles beat The King's sorry backside any day. The Beatles held the Top 5 places in the Billboard chart in April 1964, the top 6 places in Australia in March 1964, they constantly knocked themselves of the top of the charts with their latest releases, and they held the top spot in the UK album chart from May 63 to May 64. Of course The Beatles are better, most of their album's were No.1 hits and "Let It Be" won a best soundtrack Oscar. Sorry Elvis, The Beatles rule. It was harder to reach No.1 single in the 1960's. I doubt if the sales of Elvis's new release would have been enough to take him to the top back then. Hitting the top spot 17 times out of 25 in the singles heyday is a historical achievement, worth more than these lousy manufactured groups getting a string of "hits".

As long as we're talking about U.K. number ones, I thought I'd throw this out for discussion: the "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane" single broke the string of number one hits by peaking at #2. I've heard it said that part of the reason it didn't make it to number one was that it was a double-A sided single, meaning that the two songs competed against each other for airplay. Anyone have any other thoughts about this? Should SFF/PL have been marketed differently?

If people would prefer, I can move this topic to the And Your Bird Can Sing forum.

About "PEnny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever":

the UK singles chart did not incorporate any airplay info into its compilation, that`s why having two strong A-sides did not hurt in the UK charts (unlike the US).

Good point. Elvis the Pelvis never wrote a song in his life.

"you ain't never wrote your music and you ain't no one to talk," to the tune of "Hound Dog." Elvis could swivel a mean pelvis, but he couldn't do the cool hair and dance thing the Beatles did; Elvis sounded like a tired braying donkey compared to the Fab 4.

Apples and Oranges, people. Apples and Oranges. Doesn't make sense to compare them - they brought totally different things to the mix.

I'm not much of an Elvis fan, but I do think that he and the others of his era broke down a lot of barriers and without them as predecessors, it might have been much more difficult for the Beatles to have become successful. He was one of their idols at one point, after all.

That's a nice way to talk about your boys hero. If memory serves me correct it was the Beatles who went looking to meet Elvis in LA when they came to America, bad teeth and all. Elvis outsold your boys, on stage there was no comparison and he was better looking then your boys combined. Did I forget to mention that Elvis Aloha special was seen by 1.5 billion people or 25% of the world's population in 1973. 750,000 people go to Graceland every year, how many go to Lennon's house? not to many from what I read. I never disrespected the Beatles until I read some of your ignorant posts. And in case some of you don't remember, Elvis was one person, not a group of 4, keep that in mind also with your comparisons. Did I like the Beatles, you bet, but I don't like arrogant or disrespectful fans. To pick on Elvis a man who inspired your boys is very low class, have a nice day people.

In the advert, the man who referees the matches is Eric Cantona, a Frenchman who played most of his career in England. He was voted a few years ago as Manchester United's Greatest Ever Player, and still is a legend at the club.

Dont worry everyone give it a couple of weeks and The Long and Winding Road will be number 1 in England (never released as a single here. Even though it has been recorded by our Pop Idol winner and runner up Will and Gareth. Its quite close to the original but with the two guys showing their vocal ranges in a sort of play off each other. Not quite sure it suits the song but hey its still The Long and Winding Road

01) Elvis in Aloha was not seen by 1.5 billion people, only deluded Elvis fans believe such a fantasy figure.

That show was only telecast live in the far east, countries like Indonesia, Philippines etc. Not more than 500 million people watched that show live.

Then the show was shown in many other countries, but not live (including the U.S.). It was re-shown several times in the U.S., and the accumulated total of watchers thus of course included often the very same persons that had watched it some weeks or months before.

So that`s not 1.5 billion different people having watched Elvis, no way. Maybe 700 million altogether, and not at once (=live).

The Beatles were watched LIVE by 400 million people performing just one song in 1967 ("All You Need Is Love").

02) Of those 750,000 that visit Graceland every year, not all are Elvis fans. Some tourist companies include Graceland in their travel line, so those tourist get to visit Graceland this way, without having to be Elvis fans at all.

If the Beatles all had lived in one house during the 1960s, one Graceland-like palace, and if that place would have been opened to the public later, I would bet there`d also be thousands of persons visiting that place yearly (but less than Graceland, as the UK has far less tourists visits compared to America).

03) Elvis did not outsell "our boys". Both acts have sold between 500-600 million records globally (the 1 billion-claim for both artists is not true, btw).

But like John Lennon i do believe that before him there was nothin. Because before Elvis there wasnt any music that could talk just right and straigh to the heart of the youth. That's the "nothin" Lennon was talkin bout. Elvis turned that nothin into something: ROCK N ROLL, a new language. He was the first to do that and he was the best in doin it. That's why he was THE KING.
And he's still is.

I agree that he was the first to do that, but certainly not the best...I could argue from a musical perspective, but that`s not my area. I could show you that the Beatles had a bigger impact on the charts worldwide, right from 63/64 on to the end in 1970. Almost all of their singles went to No. 1, or at least to the Top 5. Elvis, however, struggled to have real big hits from 1956 to 1959. He needed to record European folk tunes and Italian ballads to really become a chart force outside English-speaking countries. And this only from 1960 to 1963 (and also, less forceful, 1969/70).

If the Beatles outperformed Presley in worldwide charts, they must have been more important to the youth of the western world than Elvis, that`s the only logic conclusion.

I guess I`ll have to show you how the Beatles` singles performed in international charts compared to Elvis. You will then see that the Beatles had more impact on youth culture than Elvis had.

The following list shows how the Beatles` singles have done on the charts of many countries around the world. Only A-sides are included, B-sides charting separately because of high Airplay are excluded (thus no US entry for “From Me To You” or “I Should Have Known Better”).

Dear Wolf, thank you very much for your so interesting list, nevertheless in my opinion the only thing that it shows is that the Beatles just sold more records, and that's a fact that nobody wants to deny. But here we're talkin, to use your word, of "impact", and sorry but that's a thing that you can't measure simply quoting the charts history. To make you an example, Bob Dylan in all his musical career topped the chart only once, but still his "impact" is surely to be judged just as big and important as the one both Elvis and the Beatles had.

"Because before Elvis there wasnt any music that could talk just right and straigh to the heart of the youth. That's the "nothin" Lennon was talkin bout. Elvis turned that nothin into something: ROCK N ROLL, a new language. He was the first to do that and he was the best in doin it. That's why he was THE KING."

That`s what you said. What I showed above was simply that the Beatles did talk right and straight to the heart of the international (western) youth more than Elvis did.

If an artist "talks to your heart", you buy his records, right? So obviously it has something to do with records sales.

And Bob Dylan, like it or not, was not as hot and influential in non-English-speaking countries as the Beatles or Elvis. That has something to do with many people being focused on the sound of a record, the melody, the way it is sung, the overall production, and this was/is especially the case in countries where a different language than English is being spoken.

The big masses of youths outside English-speaking countries did not see the genuis in Dylan like their contemporaries did in America or the UK, because Dylan`s success was so much more based on his lyrics than the Beatles` or Elvis`, that was Dylan`s problem (in the 60s), outside the English-speaking world, somehow.

Wrong. Unfortunately records sales ain't ruled by this romantic law (if it would be so simple and beautiful, many people of the music industry would be instantly fired). That's why i can't accept your argument according to which the significance of an artist is measured mostly by the number of records sold.
Do you think that the Spice Girls have sold so many records in their brief career 'cause their music was heart touchin'??

Let me add my two cents in here. What I believe you two are discussing is the fact that one act is better than the other. Elvis did open the door for many artists all over the world, the Beatles included. He sold millions of records and made his "impact" with his charm, looks and stage moves.

When the Beatles appeared on the scene, their "impact" was not just charm and looks. They each had a separate persona that blended together to add to their appeal. The Beatles were able to ride this crest for only a few years. Near the end, each was pulling away from the others, but the music appeal was still there.

Though both Elvis and the Beatles still sell records today, Elvis does fall short in general appeal to the music buying public. The majority of his songs are dated. Early rock and roll songs tend to have this shortcoming. Only a small portion of the Beatles material can be put it that catagory.

True, Elvis may have more #1s in Britain than the Beatles, but I don't see him upstaging the Beatles on the world stage.

No bearkat, it was not only a matter of charm and stages moves. Probably you're not interested, but if u wanna have a real idea of what the Elvis impact was all about, my suggestion is to read the book by Peter Guralnick "Last train from Memphis". You will find that it was more than a pelvis shakin.
What i am discussin' with Wolf then, it's not "who's the best" or "who's the greatest" or whatever ( i adore 'em both and essentially i agree with Rellevart opinion: two different stories), but the fact that he measures the importance of a musician by the number of records that this has sold (=the more you sell the greater you are). I just think that this system of judgment is all wrong.
That's it.

Void,

I have never said that selling many records means that you`re great. Do you think I`m a complete idiot? We were not discussing who put out better music, Elvis or the Beatles. We were talking about "impact". How can you have lasting impact without selling some records? If only a small amount of people cares for you, you generally have not that big of an impact. There are exceptions (Velvet Underground, Gram Parsons), of course.

And of course having impact on people by selling many records does not mean you`re automatically a quality act (but the Spice Girls, for example, surely had some impact on teenage girls, regardless of what you think about their music). There are many cases of big-selling artists that put out bad music (especially recently), but this is not relevant in the case of the Beatles and Elvis, both are quality acts, and the impact they had on people`s lives can indeed be measured by the amount of records they sold.

Finally, I don`t understand why you think that music that touches people`s hearts is not being bought by them. This does not make sense at all.

I'm very sorry Wolf, i guess i expressed myself in a wrong way, forgive me. What i meant is that in my opinion i dont believe that the impact of a musician (and with "impact" i mean the influence that this has exerted both on music and society) can be measured ONLY by the amount of the records sold. In any case.

And of course i do believe that folks buy the music they're touched by. But what i meant to say in the post you're referrin to, is that a record can sure become a number one hit also for less noble reasons than that (don't forget that after all we're talkin' of music BUSINESS)
