ARISE Sir Peter.
The man responsible for one of the most famous Beatles album covers has been knighted in the Queen's birthday honours list.
Peter Blake, the pop artist who designed the cover of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album in 1967, is set to join his pal Sir Paul McCartney as a knight of the realm.
The 69-year-old from Kent has strong connections with Liverpool from when he won the junior prize in the 1961 John Moores exhibition with a picture, Self portrait with badges.
Then in 1963 he met the Beatles through a mutual friend and was
appointed to design a cover on their forthcoming album.
He said today: "It's a wonderful time to get this, as I celebrate my 70th birthday next week.
"I started at the Royal College of Art the year of the Queen's coronation in 1953.
"And it's funny to be getting a knighthood at the same time as Mick Jagger - we lived 50 yards away from each other. It's nice that two Dartford boys are getting honours simultaneously."
Mick Jagger - he went to school with Peter's brother - was also said to be delighted with his controversial knighthood.
Ex-England football boss Bobby Robson was "thrilled and delighted" at his biggest prize - a knighthood.
The popular Newcastle United boss was rewarded for services to football during a long career.
Sir Bobby, 69, joins England World Cup heroes Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Geoff Hurst as well as the Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as a football knight.
He said: "I am absolutely thrilled and delighted to receive this honour from the Queen in her Golden Jubilee year."
Another sporting star honoured is athlete Paula Radcliffe, winner of this year's London Marathon, has received an MBE.
Stage and TV star Danny La Rue - known to millions for his drag act - gets an OBE after 50 years in showbiz while the same honour goes to actor David 'Poirot' Suchet. Playwright Harold Pinter becomes a Companion of Honour.
