I, myself, have read one book about the Beatles and that is The Love You Make. Has anyone else read this book? what do you think of it? IS it pretty truthful? I really didnt know that much about what went on behind the scenes of groups like the beatles. It wasnt exactly a shock to find out, but it wasnt quite what I expected. I also liked learning about the songs, like how Hey Jude was actually for Julian. I'm sure all of you other Beatlemaniacs knew that already, but it was new info. to me! I was also a little shocked to find out that Martha My Dear was about Paul's dog. However, I have learned to expect things like that from the beatles! They're a little crazy, but great!

ive read that book. It was ok, i dont know if it is true. Some good books to read is Shout!, and the best Lennon book ive read is Lennon by Ray Coleman. Its soo good and detailed. I laughed and cried.

I have read Lennon, Beatles Forever, and The Love You Make. I loved each of them. They are all wonderful. Is there such a thing as a bad beatle book? Well, they are all great reads.

I highly recommend "Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now" by Barry Miles. Miles was an "insider" during The Beatles years, and his book is Sir Paul's authorized biography, written after hundreds of hours of interviews with Sir Paul.

thanks everybody..I was looking for some new beatles books to read.....I enjoyed The Love You Make, so I'm sure I'll enjoy the other books.....Is the new biography that is coming out supposed to be any good? How can it be complete without John?????????

I thought the love you make was great. I'm reading the Beatles authorized biography by Hunter Davis copywright 1968. Some fantastic accounts of their early days. Some of the stories are however leaving out details that I've read before. They dance around Brian E's sexuality, for example. I read somewhere once that Queenie, his mum, wouldn't permit the fact to be published. Has anyone read this one?

Jtal, go out and buy it. You cannot beat it.
It's an unprecedented critical feat, impassioned, compelling. It's just a vigorous testament to the legacy of The Beatles. All other beatles books are measured against this.
You have to remember, Beatle books are an industry; this product pretty much closes down the factory.

i found the love you make most enjoyable.
my sister read half of it.
shes not much of a reader.
she always says she wants to get by on her looks<yeah right, in this day and age not possible>
she always blames for her mistakes errr she is so mean at times.

"The Beatles", by Hunter Davis is highly reccommended. It is copywrited in 1968 so imagine the detail in the events up until that time. The pre-Beatlemania accounts (many with Pete Best) are enlightening. You feel like you were there as they were working their way through the smaller clubs.The last few chapters have each Beatle talk about what it was/is like to be a Beatle. It ends with Magical Mystery Tour so
they were still in it. You can usually find it on ebay pretty cheap. I've seen it in bookstores with 1985 and 1996 updates.

jtal: Where did you find the Hunter Davies book? I remember the anticipation I felt waiting for its release. Of course, I made my purchase the very day the book became available, sat down and read it straight through. You're right -- it was great for its time and did "soften" some of the rougher elements and events, so it made for a happy read. I made the mistake of lending my copy to a friend who, in turn, lost the jacket! I was devastated! I still, however, have the book and it's in great condition. I thought it had long been forgotten. Thanks!

I found a hard cover 1st edition 1968 print on ebay for $2.99 plus shipping. Nobody else bid on it. It did not have the jacket, which I didn't realize anyway (no picture, let that be a lesson if you're buying as a collector). I've seen it on ebay with the jacket in the past. Barnes and Noble has an updated soft cover version.

Lovely Rita: I remember that book. May Pang was the girl who accompanied John to the West Coast when he was separated from Yoko. I was not interested in reading it because I felt Ms. Pang was only trying to cash in on her brief relationship with John. I truly don't know too much about what she had to say, but I read a review of the book and it gave me no incentive to purchase it. I, too, read LOVING JOHN, and bought the reissue JOHN LENNON: THE LOST WEEKEND (Living, Loving and Making Rock 'n' Roll). I was looking for anyone who could tell me what John was like.

May Pang's books were the first taste I found of a John who might actually have been a human being. Then I went on to read THE BEATLES, LENNON AND ME by Pete Shotton and Nicholas Schaffner, THE LIVES OF JOHN LENNON by Albert Goldman, as well as JOHN LENNON: MY BROTHER by Julia Baird and Geoffrey Giuliano, and THE MAN WHO GAVE THE BEATLES AWAY by Allan Williams and William Marshall.

Why do I read such controversial books? Because the writing of them did cause controversy. I thrive on controversy!! Just kidding http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

No, seriously, I never found a picture of the "real" man in any book I'd read before that. Every word was gospel, everything he said or done was akin to the acts of the Apostles. He seemed like a paperdoll, all music and peace and light...

No one who wrote such music as John Lennon had written lived life in a bubble gum machine as the other books kept expecting us to believe. And other than Albert Goldman, these authors were or had been personally involved with John at some point, and had no reputation of their own to protect. Without exception, the books were all written from a personal point of view.

I finally found a human John... whether the John portrayed in their books is an actual reflection of the man himself, I'll never really know, because I never really knew him. But these people did...

Thank you everyone for your opinions and suggestions. They are deeply appreciated. I don't know whether I will be reading Loving John in the near future or not, for I have a lot of other books to read right now.
School is coming closer and I have summer work to complete for honors English for this coming school year. However, I will let you know when I read it and will share my opinion of it.
