Julian Lennon could be heading for an angry clash with Sir Paul McCartney after recording a Beatles song for a TV commercial.

A 30-second snippet of When I'm 64 is being used in an advertisement for U. S. insurance giant Allstate.

The move by John Lennon's son will infuriate McCartney and could also reopen his rift with Michael Jackson, who owns the publishing rights to around 250 Beatles songs and gave permission for the tune to be used commercially.

McCartney and Ringo Starr have long made it clear they do not want any of their music used in adverts.

They once issued a joint statement saying: 'We are not in the business of singing jingles. We do not peddle sneakers, pantyhose or anything else.'

Last night, Julian Lennon's agent confirmed the ad track had been recorded but appeared unconcerned at the prospect of a rift between the two men.

He said: 'As far as we are concerned they would not have to talk about it because there is no need to.'

It is the first time Julian has recorded a Beatles song and Allstate is boasting it is 'one of only a handful of companies ever to gain the rights to use a Beatles song for commercial purposes'.

McCartney lost control of rights to the songs in 1985 when Jackson paid £50million for the back catalogue, beating a joint bid by the ex-Beatle and Lennon's widow Yoko Ono.

The sale led to a feud and McCartney - who recorded two singles with Jackson in the 1980s -is reportedly still furious with his former friend. A number of advertisements featuring Beatles tunes have followed.

In 1987, Revolution was used to advertise Nike trainers after the company paid about £166,000 for one advert.

Jackson also allowed Good Day Sunshine to advertise Oriel cookies, and All You Need Is Love was used by National Panasonic.

Such was his irritation that McCartney later announced he would meet with the American singer and personally appeal to him to stop.

He said: 'What Michael is doing cheapens songs which mean a lot not only to me but to a generation of Beatles fans.

'I thought Revolution was a serious song with a serious meaning - not a jingle to sell sneakers.'

But matters worsened when Jackson refused to sell back the rights or increase his royalties, despite stories that Yoko had re-negotiated the share due to her late husband.

Last year it was reported that Jackson was planning to sell the rights to cover legal bills and help with the upkeep of his Neverland ranch in California. However, he later denied the claims, saying: 'I want to clarify a silly rumour: The Beatles catalogue is not for sale, has not been for sale and will never be for sale.'

Meanwhile, the ads have continued, and the fact that the latest one has been recorded by Lennon's son is likely to be even harder for McCartney to accept.

Although credited as a collaboration, When I'm 64 was McCartney's own composition.

He originally wrote it for a musical when he was 16 and it was resurrected for the Sgt Pepper album when, as Lennon said, it was still only 'half a song'.

McCartney added new lyrics and recorded it largely solo, with help from George Martin on the arrangement of clarinets.

However, the song caused friction with both Lennon and George Harrison. In 1980, Lennon said: 'I would never even dream of writing a tune like tha'.'

McCartney, who is currently abroad with fiancee Heather Mills, was unavailable for comment yesterday.

I knew it would have happened... and, sorry to say, I am on Paul's part... it's ignoble to hear such songs on an adverstiment, even if you can find them nice, when you think of what they mean to the people who written them, and you hear them in a car/shoes/perfume/whatever adv, well, it's sad...

Oh, and thanks for the article, shyGirl! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Don't apologize, beatlemaniac, because I also hate Michael Jackson. I never saw what was so great about him or his family's "music", and really hate the fact that the music belonging to the best musical group in history is in his hands.

I can't say that I'm angry at Julian, though. Just a little disapointed. I would have thought that he would know the "Beatle rules" by now. Beatles songs in advertisements cheapens the songs and their meanings.

I can't stand the thought of the Beatles' songs being in this guy's hands. It makes me sick. I can't imagine how much it must hurt Paul and I feel for him. It's so sad.

One bright spot in all of this: I heard the song and it's pretty good.

I think it's mean spirited of him to not sell the rights back to Paul & Yoko, but then turn around and allow the songs to be used to peddle merchandise. I cringe every time I hear a song I know being used in a commercial, especially a Beatle song.

Why is Julian doing this? Does he need the money?

Didn't Ringo once sell Wine Coolers...?
He has kind of jumped the fence on this one, hasn't he?

Regarding Michael Jackson, let's not forget the REAL reason to hate him- he abuses children.

Ringo didn't use his or any Beatle songs to sell anything. He acted as a spokesman for the product. Julian is using a song that's not his to sell a product. There's a difference.

I am not defending Jacko here-- he WAS a very talented and influential musician who has become a freakish laughingstock. From a business standpoint, he is doing what anyone else in his shoes would- and does- do: making money off his portfolio. He didn't buy the publishing rights to hang the contract on the wall and admire it. What is so irritating is the completely mercenary way in which he got the rights in the first place. It was reported many times that Paul, as a friend, advised MJ to get into music publishing in the first place. Couldn't some deal have been worked out to have Paul, Yoko and MJ share the rights or something? No. Michael wanted it all to himself and continues to take a self-righteous stance with his "they will never be for sale" attitude. When he dies he'll probably will the contract to some chimp on his estate.

This is really a tough subject. The first mistake was Paul & Yoko's. They should've coughed up enough money to buy them, but each offer they made was not enough to the previous owner. Paul admitted that he never thought the music was worth more than they offered.

Paul did admit that he suggested that Michael get into this & Michael even joked to Paul about buying Paul's songs. Paul laughed it off.

Michael was just the top bidder & you can't blame him for that. He just wanted them more and it was a great investment. Unfortunately, he's the owner & can do whatever he likes with them.

George once said that he didn't care if you used his songs as jiggles as long as HE got paid for it & you couldn't have him singing it or use his version.

I think if someone else does the song, it helps promote the Beatles. Heck, we ALL know it's a Beatles song! I don't think that hurts.

But the one thing that does bother me is that the people who wrote the songs should get the money for it & that can't happen because Michael knows what the music is worth & doesn't want to sell it while he's alive. Can you blame him?

Let's hope that his kid isn't so smart & the Beatles kids (or grandkids) scrap up enough to buy them back someday!!!

I think Paul learned a big bad lesson! OUCH!

I forgot to say, I'm sorry that Julian recorded it. I don't think that helps his relations with Paul much. But, maybe the money was too good of an offer for him?

Don't think I would've done it if I were him for any amount of money. Oh well...
