So what are YOUR thoughts?
Using one of George's most powerful songs for a commercial? And so soon after his death?
I myself am enraged,and saddened.

Don't be sorry! There is a commercial which is being aired on U.S. television that uses the song "Taxman" to advertise a company that helps you prepare your tax forms. It's not the Beatles version, it's some kind of soft rock sounding version.

I think it's a little tasteless given the timing, but frankly, I'm surprised they never thought of it before! I'm not horribly offended by it, but, as I said, it's a little tacky.....

Thanks for the explanation. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif I don't agree with the using of the song for this purposes.

It's a really crappy version of it, too. I saw that and just said "yuck".

Is this a new commercial? Seems to me someone used it before & I'm curious if it's the same company just doing it again. Still, not really in good taste, is it?

I guess we can blame our little buddy Michael Jackass Jackson since he's the weasel who owns their music!

lol, micheal jackass jackson. i dunno, i really didnt mind the commercial all that much. i thought it was funny how they had all of those weird people singin the song. plus, i dont think george would have made a big fuss over a silly commercial. obviously someone in the ad agency likes the beatles.

Replying to a couple things at once:

1. If I recall correctly, Jackson owns the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, but not the Harrisongs, since those were/are owned by a separate company.

2. When Nike used "Revolution," George was quoted as saying this (This was orginally in Musician and reprinted in Beatlesongs):

If it's allowed to happen, every Beatles song ever recorded is going to be advertising women's underwear and sausages. We've got to put a stop to it in order to set a precedent. ... It's one thing if we're dead, but we're still around! They don't have any respect for the fact that we wrote and recorded those songs, and it was our lives....

I beleive all of George pre 68 songs are Northern, excepting Don't Bother Me (JaEp Music=JAmes+EPstein).

The fault of all of this lies in the advice they were given in 1964 to float Northern Songs on the Stock Exchange.

The first songs published by "Harrisongs Ltd" are the ones from the White Album. Everything before that is "Northern Songs Ltd", except "Don't Bother Me" which is published by "Dick James Music Corp"

Whoever sings "Taxman" for the commercial (I saw it 2x yesterday) does an atrocious job. Their version should be audited!

i heard a commercial on the radio for either a car-sales or sears and they were playing a beatles song in the background. it wasn't by the Beatles either tho, it had some strings and flutes. It sounded awful, even for a Beatles song!! (I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST SAID THAT....)

I was a bit surprised when I first saw it, but it washed off like rain. I think it's basically harmless. Not really a bad idea for a commercial if you think objectively about it. If it was the Beatle's version I would probably be offended, though.
