View Full Version : Fleetwood Macīs Lindsey Buckingham covers "Here comes the sun" on ABC show

Fleetwood Macīs guitar player Lindsey Buckingham covered "Here comes the sun" as a tribute to George on ABCīs New Yearīs Eve show, hosted by Peter Jennings.
The Fleetwood Mac Fan Forum currently has a, well... heated... debate on whether this is actually a good interpretation of the song or not; it is... well, quite unusual, to say the least... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thinker.gif
I was given this link, I think it should still work:
http://burnish.net/audio/herecomesthesun.mp3
BTW, if anyone of you saw it that day - did you notice that a chunk of the guitar was actually missing? The gossip behind it: The producers of the show allegedly heard of Buckinghamīs idea (probably even his new version) and decided to cancel his segment. When they told him about it at his hotel, it infuriated Buckingham so much that he smashed his guitar onto the ground the same minute. After some discussion he was finally put back into the showīs schedule, but only played "Here comes the sun" (with his no longer completely intact guitar, for whatever reason... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif ) - no interview etc.; As I said before, this is the gossip circulating on the internet about it.
Probably even more delightful for him was the fact that the host even introduced him as "FMīs FORMER guitar player" (the band is currently recording a new album WITH HIM)... The (somewhat moody IMO) introduction to this tribute version can also be heard on the file.
I wonīt dismiss Buckinghamīs talent, but this wasnīt exactly my favourite cover version of a Beatles tune... and thatīs also the reason I added this little story behind it - I am obviously not the only one whoīs not too thrilled with this version.
Please tell me what YOU think!

I have this file, without the intro though... I thought it was quite interesting. When you do a cover of a wonderful song, you have two choices: 1š you do it exactly or very similar to the original, which may only lead to horrible results; or 2š you try to adapt it to your own style. Lindsey tends to play like this... changing the melodies and stuff like that to make the tunes suitable to his vocals. I think his style is pretty interesting and he's a very gifted guitar player (hence "Big Love" on The Dance album, which totally deserved a Grammy)... and George himself quite enjoyed the well done innovations to his songs (like what he did on "My Sweet Lord 2000" with Sam Brown singing some vocals). I think he would have enjoyed this, while it isn't by any chance the best version of the song. It is different, that's all. And a beautiful tribute from a great guitarist to one of the greatest guitarists ever.
I liked it. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I agree with Darkhorse about how to handle a cover.
I don''t like this cover and I also hear quite some 'Never going back again' guitar chords of the Rumours album specially in the first part of this performance.

[/B][/QUOTE] I had a chance to take a listen
myself and for my tastes, the guitar playing
is pretty extroardinary and the version tends to sound very differant from the original if that's what you're into. But I
think I prefer something that's a little
closer to the original myself. But I do
give Lindsay an A for the spirit in which
it seemed to be performed.

Wait... even though "Here Comes The Sun" is my favorite George song during his Beatle period, and The Beatles' version is totally uncomparable, I try to give Buckingham some credit because his guitar playing is different (not by any chance better) and he did his tribute to George on 'his own way'. I appear to be alone on this one though. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

From what I heard, you are alone, Darky. Buckingham's verion is not what I thought it would be. He needs to stick with Fleetwood Mac material.

Not entirely alone Darkhorse. Not that I thought it was particularly good or anything and his guitar did sound as if a chunk was missing from it. Just different and a tribute to George.

My husband and I saw this live as it happened -- and turned it off. We thought it was possibly one of the WORST covers of any Beatles song, definitely of any George song, that we have EVER heard...
If that story Magneto posted is true, that might have had something to do with it, but even so...bleah!
BTW, Hi Magneto, Welcome!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wave1.gif

And HMVNipper, I can really count more than 50 covers of Beatles songs that are worse than this one... Think about Julio Iglesias singing "Something"... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/barf1.gif

Well Darkhorse, this yes/no discussion even made it to Abbey Road's newspage with various reactions.

And the song which I thought it sounds like is not the right one, it is The Chain.

I think there's some bits of "Never Going Back Again", others from "The Chain" and even some of "Big Love" from "The Dance".
