View Full Version : McCartney Talks of Harrison's Loss

LONDON (AP) - Paul McCartney told Thursday of his last meeting with George Harrison, two weeks before ``the quiet Beatle'' died of cancer last month.
``The best thing for me was seeing him for a couple of hours and laughing and joking and holding his hand,'' the former Beatle said in an interview with British Broadcasting Corp. He later realized he had never before held Harrison's hand.
``We'd been to school together and got on buses together and we didn't hold each other's hands,'' McCartney said. ``It was like a compensation; he was rubbing his thumb up and down my hand and it was very nice.''
He said he and former Beatle Ringo Starr had spoken about their loss, ``just to touch base and say `what a bummer.' It's difficult to know what to say.''
McCartney, who recently released ``Driving Rain,'' his first album of new material in four years, also said he was planning to play live dates with a new band next year.

Very impressive this is.

It'll give "I Want to Hold Your Hand" a new meaning the next time I listen to it.

omg! I never knew those men (almost said boys and they aren't that anymore) were like that!! i'm very surprised to read that George would rub his thumb on pauls hand, but yet thats VERY touching, very very very touching to me, I guess I always knew George was a touchy feely kinda guy, and hes very loving to all, and when I mean all I also mean to "big brothers" like Paul http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I think a good way to celebrate Christmas this year would be to listen to the Beatles' Christmas bootleg. It's a lot of fun and 1964 and 1965 are my favorite Christmas albums.

An excellent suggestion indeed! I also like to do a "Beatlethon" with the offical albums.

You hit a certain point in your life where a dear, dying friend caressing your hand isn't "strange" at all...

I know what you mean. Sometimes you don't give love gestures the importance they have. Holding your best friend's hand could stop being weird when that point of your life comes. That's the moving thing about Paul's gesture. Still very emotional.

I also thing when you get to that age where your 55+ you get more emotional and have more open eyes towards the world. And at that age, men will even kiss friendly, not in a gayish way or anything. Just a really friendly cheek on the lips, I think I saw paul n ringo do that, lol
But I think its nice, they are maturing very nice, and to hear that George n Paul did that is very nice

When you figure they've known each other for over 40 years (and some of those years were pretty intense!), there's nothing strange or odd about it. I've always considered them brothers, even though they're not blood related. If you can't hold your brother's hand when he's dying, when could you?
It must be very hard on Paul & Ritchie now, just the two of them left. I pray for all of them and their families daily.

Q: In the Anthology book, you talk about the unwound G string. What is that? I play guitar and I'm not sure what you're talking about.
George: It's one of those little things that goes up your butt so that people can't see your pantylines.

I would also think that George
touching hands with Paul almost signifies
not only the love that George has inside
as a human being, but also a possible forgiveness for everything they've been through-- I mean, I think most folks might
take for granted that Paul was "always" like
the older brother to George, but maybe
towards the end of George's life, it could've
been the other way around in a sense... --JC

Thanks Beatlebangs '64-- it's
nice to be appreciated! I think I should
also perhaps clarify that what I meant about "possible forgiveness about what they've been through"
is not what they've been through as a whole,
but simply those times that were rough for
them. For example, the tensions they had in
the Let it Be period; I'm sure that Paul &
Ringo would look back at those times and
say that they had their problems even with
their great success and that they're human
like each of us. Conclusion: If George might
have been touching Paul's hand recently
due to partially forgiving him for their differances, George is to be applauded again!!--(that's not an easy thing to do
I say!-http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/shakehead1.gif )
