John Lennon on course to be named greatest Briton

John Lennon is favourite to win a national poll to find the greatest Briton of all time.
He is leading William Shakespeare, Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Winston Churchill.
So far, 10,000 people have voted in the BBC poll, which closes on New Year's Eve.
Charles Darwin, Captain Cook and Admiral Nelson are also in the Top 10 at the moment, reports The Times.
The highest placed living person so far is Paul McCartney.
Other contenders in the poll are Sir Ernest Shackleton, Queen Elizabeth I, Michael Crawford, Eric Morecambe, David Bowie, Sir Steven Redgrave and David Beckham.
A BBC spokesman said: "There are many surprises, not least the high placing for Sir Ernest Shackleton and Michael Crawford, while Chaucer is languishing.
"But nothing in the poll is fixed, and people still have time to make their choice."
Nominations can be made by ringing 08700 100870 or via the website at www.bbc.co.uk/greatbritons. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/greatbritons.)

Interesting. John left England for good in 1971 or 1972, and I don't think he EVER went back for the rest of his life.

On the other hand, Paul has always and will always live in England, has done a crapload of charity work for Liverpool and other areas, and pays god knows what in taxes every year to the country. He gets my vote.

With all respect for John, the greatest Briton should not be an artist or football player.

No offence at all to John whom I think contributed enormously to the world's music and my enjoyment of it, but I guess it is as George said, "It's What You Value".

I would have picked Churchill myself.

This week, the Beatles' greatest hits album, 1, is at number seventy-three on the US charts. Driving Rain, by Paul McCartney, is number sixty-eight.

This post is dedicated to the memory of George Harrison.

I agree, I don't think the "greatest" Briton should be a musician or athlete, sorry...there are so many more worthy people. Churchill is definitely up there -- IMO, he did a lot more for the country than ANY of the Beatles did, and I love the Beatles!

I'll be very interested in seeing how this turns out.

If it hadn't been for Churchill, all of the Beatles' songs would be in German, not just those two.

Good Point! Sometimes we lose sight of really important decisions and contributions made by individuals that also helped to mold the future in a positive way............It must be the "Beatle-mania" in us!! (HA!HA!)

Churchill just helped undo the mess Chamberlain got the world into.
Even then, if not for FDR and the USA, there would have been more than 2 Beatle songs sung in German.
Lennon on the other hand, impacted an entire generation and beyond, on their views of human rights, spirituality, and freedom, comparing only to Ghandi and MLK.{neither one British}
yea, he left England in 1972. they were lucky to have him so long.

Shakespire and Churchill together cannot match the influence on who we are today, that is John Lennon.
...give peace a chance...all you need is love..war is over, if you want it..........

Not being funny but what on earth do you mean we were lucky to have him so long? And believe it or not some things are acheived with the US getting involved, if John had stayed here he wouldn't have been shot, as guns are illegal here.

England is not that bad you know.

I find it amazing how guns/wapons are allowed in the USA and even after the
#100+ shooting at schools or just accross the street, 'life still goes on'.

And sorry Joe, but I won't comment on your remark about the US involvement in worldwide happenings and SIR Winston. We don't wanna go into that I hope.
