View Full Version : George's Death and the Charts

I got this article excerpt from MTV.com. It's mainly about next week's Billboard charts but it had a little bit about how George's death boosted his solo and Beatles record sales:
"George Harrison's passing last week impacted sales of the Beatles' 1. The onetime #1 record will jump 73 positions to #73 following a twofold increase in sales of the greatest-hits collection.
Meanwhile, on next week's BillboardTop Pop Catalog Albums chart, Harrison's death drove up sales of both his solo work and Beatles LPs. His classic All Things Must Pass (1970) sold 13,000 copies last week, up from 900 the week before, and The Best of George Harrison (1976) went from selling 400 copies to more than 10,000. The Beatles' Abbey Road (1969) jumped from 4,500 copies per week to more than 12,000, and 1968's The Beatles (better known as the White Album) increased from 3,100 to more than 9,300."

Indeed. But it also happened when Frank Sinatra died... lots of increasing sales. People begin to appreciate artists after their passings. It's just alright I guess.

Yeah, and it also happened in 1980 when John died. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cry2.gif

I guess it piques peoples' interest and maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Yes, it seems like the sales really jump, after a beloved singer/musician passes on. I remember that happening with John, as well as with Roy Orbison, when he passed away in December of 1988.

Also,I had heard that 25% of George's wealth came with the success of the Beatles#1 CD within the last year!! He was a gifted man who kept it all in perspective, this thing called FAME & FORTUNE.

The article doesn't mention it, but I wonder if it is helping the sales of Driving Rain any. Last week it was 65, now it is 68. It's nowhere near the previous drop of going to 65 from 26.

Yeah, I heard about all this on the radio. It is amazing.
Angelle, who knows... I'm curious, too. I wonder if John's, Paul's & Ringo's sales are up.

Amazing news, but its too bad it takes a death to pique interest in an artist.

All this Information is so true!
Two weeks ago I went to buy "All things must pass" and it had been sold out.But finally I got it.And as I've noticed in other Cd-shops the Beatles Cds were limited in contrast of the days before George's death when there was a plenty of them.

How is Beatles music in Greece these days. Hard to get by in general?
Is Trio Helenique still a band? For many years they had the most-ever-selling single in The Netherlands with Zorba's Dance.

Q: George, have you and the other Beatles ever been to Russia or South America?
George; We don't want particularly to go to Russia, well I don't. And South America, I don't think they've heard of us down there.

There is not a single cd-shop which has not the Beatles Records. But I think that only older people like them.Generally the Beatles are very famous here in Greece.
The teenagers here prefere the Greek bands and artists and the psychedelic, low bab and hard rock kind of music.
All my classmates dislike the Beatles and they are making fan of them but I really don't care.
Trio Helenique? I don't thing this band still exists.
Do you know any other greek artists or composers(such as Hatzidakis)?

It's shame it takes his death to get the intesterest but in a way it is nice because I know that some people have taken an interest in him after reading about him in the papers. Someone told me that they didn't know much about his solo music, they only really thought of him as a Beatle but after reading about his faith and his involvement in Handmate Films and so on they though they would listen to some of his solo stuff, so it's quite nice really.

I don't even know what a 'clone' is, though. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/tongue.gif (help on that, I'm serious)
And as I said before in the Palace, Sally, it's better late than never. If something 'good' can happen after this horrible tragedy is that more people will know and appreciate George's contributions to music and films, charity works and other stuff.

Well, if you're serious about that, darkhorse, a clone is an man-made genetic duplicate of another creatue. Dolly the sheep is a clone of another sheep.

I thought you wrote that another way... I imagined it was that (I mean I know what a "clón" is in Spanish), but my dictionary said it was written another way... OK whatever. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/rolleyes.gif Thanks SF4-Ever, helpful as always. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Don't worry about it, Lucy. My experience, is a little different, though. My taste is pretty eclectic, but the one music at work everyone agrees on is, ironically, the Beatles. And we have 2-3 generation gaps going! It's the only music I can consistently get away with playing, believe it or not, and I'm the only one who ever brings it in. Maybe they think it's bad form to complain about the Beatles.

oh,and that whole post-mortem thing? I think people grieve or try to have closure in whatever way they can. I also think, for some, it's a way of keeping the spirit of the individual alive. I can't seem to sleep these days, so I found and downloaded a bunch of acoustic versions of George's songs, and it's like he's in the room, the way his voice resonates off the walls- I don't even have up loud! I find it comforting, in a spiritual sense, and I fall asleep before it's over. That's pretty good for a chronic insomniac.
