· Fans of Paul McCartney's Third Reich analogies will be delighted to know that the Wings legend has added to his oeuvre. In April, he unleashed his bewitching intelligence to explain that slaughtering cattle for food is morally equivalent to "what Hitler did to the fucking Jews".

Now, in a Mail on Sunday article trailing the Concert for New York City to be held at Madison Square Gardens this Saturday, he is minded to expand further. "The west may have millions of faults," declares Sir Paul solemnly, "but we do not allow Hitlers, that is our strength." What a mind, what a mind.

I remember reading the Hitler analogy regarding the slaughter of animals...I thought it was a bit inappropriate, to say the least...

All I can say is that perhaps in this context (i.e., discussing crazed terrorists and egomaniacal dictators of harsh regimes) he is a bit more correct in his assessment...however, I still get the impression that he doesn't think these kinds of things through entirely before he speaks...is he taking a leaf from John's book, perhaps, and not always engaging brain before inserting foot in mouth?

I belong to a mailing list where a discussion is considered to be at an end once someone invokes Hitler or Nazism. You would be surprised at how regularly a discussion about skating can degenerate into one side accusing the other of behaving like Nazis or how something or someone must be stopped like Hitler before more damage is done.

Yeah, I wish Paul would stop bringing up Hitler. It's intellectually lazy. I guess he is of a generation where Hitler and Nazism has real meaning, but he needs to come up with another analogy. Better yet, skip the analogy and just say what you feel, man.

The whole thing is highly distasteful and inappropriate at best. Paul grew up during WWII and for him, such an albeit atrocious analogy is significant.

Angelle is right about how mentioning Hitler, Nazis or applying such terms to people will bring a conversation to a grinding halt.

I think we are all in agreement here. The comment was way over the top and showed poor judgment.

No point in fanning the flames of wrath, so I think it's time to close this thread.
