View Full Version : McCartney Song Will Aid Firefighters
SF4-EVER

LONDON (AP) - Sir Paul McCartney said Wednesday that money raised by his next single will be used to help the families of New York firefighters killed and missing in the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
The former Beatle's latest single, ``From a Lover to a Friend,'' is scheduled for worldwide release on Oct. 29. More than 340 firefighters of all ranks were killed or are among the missing in the rubble of the twin towers.
McCartney was in New York on Sept. 11 and said he was ``able to witness the tremendous heroism that has come out of the city, including the bravery of the firefighters.
``I have great admiration for the courage those guys showed. I feel a connection with them because my father was a volunteer
firefighter in Liverpool during World War II,'' he said.
On Oct. 20, McCartney will take part in ``The Concert for New York,'' a four-hour extravaganza at Madison Square Garden also featuring Mick Jagger, Macy Gray, Eric Clapton and The Who, to aid victims of the attacks.

Paul is a multi-millionaire, why can't he just GIVE money to these relief efforts??

How do we know that he hasn't? Maybe he made a private donation.

If Paul made a donation, you can be sure he'd let everyone in the world know it.

Just want to point out that the paper's decide to publish tons of stories on Paul. It's not like he's writing the stories and publishing them himself.

Lynner and Dominic made good points. How do we KNOW what Paul has given privately? Even if Paul notified every newshound in creation about his contributions, why is that a terrible thing? I think the fact that he is in a position to offer help and has chosen to do so speaks volumes in his favor.
Why criticize Paul? Female Dogney Spears has made contributions to those who suffered 9/11/01. Although I don't like her, I respect what she's done on behalf of the terrorist victims/survivors.
Lynner is right about Paul not being the one who publishes this.

I'm never quite sure why people always want to criticize celebrities for their charitable acts. Poor Paul - d*&#ed if he does, d*&#ed if he doesn't. Boy, would I hate to be famous.

Maybe he should sit on his arse and do nothing then - just in case anything he does do gets reported http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif
Give the guy a break - he's a genuinely nice bloke who happens to be (very) rich because he's (very) talented.
I could understand such contempt of a businessman or crook who came from nothing to extreme wealth by hurting and treading on people - but all Paul's done to gain his money is make nice music - the only reason I could think of anyone taking issue with that would be jealousy.

Brilliantly put, Dominic. I agree with you 100%. The claim that Paul made his money by "making nice music" is really a compliment. At least that is an honest way to make a living. One of the perks is that McCartney's music and social contributions have brightened the lives of countless people, myself included. I see no reason to begrudge the man what he has to offer -- in fact, my respect for Paul as a person has increased over the years because of his social conscience and his willingness to help out in a case like this.
Just "giving money" is an impersonal way of reaching out. Paul is willing to be a part of the relief effort. That says a lot of good about Paul as a person.
Cheers to Sir Paul!

The good thing is that New York's finest hero's will get the help our country owes them. It's a good thing Paul wants to give back to the people of our country that have supported his efforts over the years. He has soooooo much good fortune to give!!!
