If I'm not mistaken, wasn't "Please Please Me" their first #1.

A letter written by guitarist George Harrison to a Beatles fan in 1963, has been sold at an auction for £3,290.
The hand written letter was sent to 15-year-old Gwen Speechley after she wrote to Harrison following a gig.
The note, which had a reserve price of £1,200 was bought by a private collector at the Christie's auction.
Harrison, then 20 and writing from his home in Liverpool, drew the logo of a "B" with an antennae on the envelope.
He told the fan: "I hope you don't forget to buy From Me To You and try to get it to No 1. I hope to meet you two when we next come to Nottingham, so come along, please, and don't forget to bring the Sherrif. [sic] Lots of love from George Harrison XXXXX."
The day after he posted the letter, From Me To You entered the charts and later became The Beatles' first No 1 record.
The fan, who is now a mother-of-two living in Norfolk, sold the letter for a few hundred pounds in the 1970s when her boiler burst and she needed the cash, states the Nottingham Evening Post.

I seem to remember that there were a few different charts in England at the time. But if the song hit #1 on any of them, you would just say it was a #1 record. Maybe "From Me To You" was their first song to hit #1 on all of the charts?

Yeah, Jerry's right. "Please Please Me" was number 1 on 3 of the 4 national charts, but "From Me to You" was a unanimous 1. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif
Pretty soon Nowhere Man will be along to tell us exactly the dates and what other songs were on the charts at the time.

I read recently that Louise the Elder had letters that had been copied for sale at Fests. I've never seen anything Louise the Elder has written, but I admit that I am interested. Does anybody know anything more about this?
One source that has mentioned it is Pat Kinzer Mancuso in her stellar book, "Do You Want to Know a Secret? The Story of the Official George Harrison Fan Club."
