Six copies of the Beatles' 1 were sold every second around the world last month. This would account for the fact that the album has gone diamond here in Canada. Diamond means one million units sold! [Editor's Note: And a fat wallet too.]
One million units in the age of Napster and burning your own CDs is amazing, until you realize it was the perfect holiday present for the masses to buy their parents. By ChartAttack's quirky estimations, we figure one in 15 Canadians has bought a copy of this mass marketed mix CD.
Besides going to number one here at home, the U.S., and the U.K., it's gone to number one in 31 other countries. It is the best selling Beatles album ever. Since its release in November, EMI has shipped over 20 million copies of 1. It was the best seller of the year in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, Italy, Portugal and Germany.
