The new Beatles album has sold 319,000 copies in it's first 6 days of release over here in the UK. Madonna's album managed 113,000 in it's first week, and the new Radiohead album sold 130,000 in a similar time. Does anyone know how it's registering on the billboard charts ?

Not sure how "1" is doing in the States, but Billboard reports that it's #1 in UK. Go to http://www.billboard.com/daily/2000/1120_01.asp and read the whole story.

UPDATE : The Beatles returned to No. 1 on The Billboard 200 this week with a collection of their 27 chart-topping hits, appropriately titled "1." The EMI/Capitol collection, which debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. album chart last weekend, sold nearly 595,000 copies in the U.S. this week, according to SoundScan, no doubt buoyed by the two-hour prime time TV special "Beatles Revolution," which aired on ABC last Friday.

......30 years after they split up !!! incredible!

Just as it once was. Back in the day, the Beatles always had a number 1, and the Yankees were always in the world series.

What's your guess as how long "1" will be number 1 for the rest this year and maybe 2001..?

I can't see anything taking its place at #1 for at least a couple of months. Good question; makes you think... What other artists can you think of that have as great a following? Noone comes to my mind.

OFan : Your absolutely "RIGHT". No one comes close. I have read where Paul and George used to say " What if Jimi Hendrix was still alive..? " After watching the Beatles Anthology video, Both Paul and George do acknowledge the fact about Jimi Hendrix and his music. But, I agree with your statement. It makes you think.

In America The Backstreet boys (snigger, snigger!!) has knocked "One" off the no 1 slot in the Billboard 200, however, in most of the other major markets in the world "One" has seen the teenyboppers off. In Britain, it has now been No 1 for 3 weeks, keeping Westlife(the hot boyband over here) at no 2. The Backstreet Boys didn't even make it into the top ten and plummeted pretty quickly. In Australia, Germany and Japan it's been pretty much the same story, with the Beatles holding off the competition.

The Backstreet Boys has knocked "One" into 2nd place in the Billboard album charts. However, "One" is easily beating the US teenyboppers in Germany, Japan and Australia.

Over here in Britain, The backstreet boys aren't very bigover here, so failed to reach the top ten, charting at 14 then dropping out very quickly. We have our own boyband over here, another here today gone tomorrow outfit called Westlife , and "One" has kept them at number two for three weeks (the Westlife album would have been the fastest selling album of the year, if not for the beatles!!)

"One" has already outsold the new U2 album worldwide despite the fact that "All That You Can't Leave Behind" has been out for 2 weeks longer.

Westlife are just a manufactured boyband with no real talent. I'm estatic that they've ben kept of the number one spot by the Beatles.

The Beatles are believed to have scored a new world record, with their greatest hits album becoming the fastest seller of all time.

Copies flew off shelves around the globe as soon as the album went on sale a month ago, with early figures suggesting the album sold 3.6 million copies in a week.

Guinness World Record chiefs are now checking the figures to establish whether the album beats the previous fastest-seller, N Sync's No Strings Attached, which sold 2.4 million.

The greatest hits album 1 has climbed to the top of the charts in 28 countries simultaneously.

A spokesman for The Beatles says: "They're all really, really thrilled."

The album has been at number one in the UK for the past three weeks and is expected to stay in the top slot until after Christmas.

Countries in which the album has topped the charts include major record-buying nations such as Japan, the US and Germany. Others include Finland, Venezuela and Chile.

When it was released last month, industry experts were tipping the album to be one of the biggest sellers of all time. It contains 27 tracks which made it to number one in the UK or the US.

It has sold 12 million so far and over the coming months is expected to catch up with The Eagles Greatest Hits which shifted 26 million - the best-selling album to date by a group.

note: the news report seems to have got a couple of it's facts concerning The Eagles Greatest hits album being the biggest selling album ever by a group. It's mainly an American Phenomenon having sold 26 million copies in America alone(making it the biggest selling album ever in the USA) It's worldwide sales are less than 35 million, which is just slightly less than Pink Floyd's "Dark side of the moon"...the beatles two largest sellers to date, have both sold in excess of 26 million: "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" - 29 million copies worldwide and "Abbey Road" which has sold 25 million copies worldwide. For the second time in four weeks, the Beatles' "1" album (Capitol) hit the top of The Billboard 200, posting another huge week at retail, with more than 670,000 copies sold, according to SoundScan. The set, which has now sold more than 2.5 million units in the U.S., easily ended a two-week run at No. 1 for the Backstreet Boys' "Black & Blue" (Jive), which fell to No. 2 after selling more than 546,000 copies.

THE BEATLES compilation album ‘1’ has
remained at the top of the UK charts, for the
fourth week running. The album which is the
fastest-selling record ever worldwide,
remains on the top of the charts ahead of
Westlife.

The Beatles 1 has just become the biggest selling album of 2000 in the UK having sold 1.3 million copies in just 5 weeks.
It outsold the previous highest seller Moby's Play album which has sold 1.28 million over the course of 12 months !

In further news: Billboard reports that the sales of 1 and their back catalogue combine to make The Beatles the biggest selling recording act of 2000 in the US.
"Combining the Beatles' hits collection "1" (5 million), with eight Capitol Records catalog titles, the group was certified for more than 18 million copies sold in 2000, the highest for any artist"

dont know exact figures, but '1' has been no. 1 in Ireland since before Christmas, not bad seeing as 'Westlife', U2 AND Ronan Keating are all Irish, and VERY popular and all had releases at the same time. Even Irish kids know REAL talent when they hear it!
