I just watched the 2-hour TV special on the Beatles. How moving and interesting it was to hear so many artists share their feelings and memories of the Fab Four. What a tremendous, unprecedented influence the Beatles had on the entire world! I learned so much from this program. It also served as a stroll down memory lane for one who lived through the entire phenomenon. What did you think of the special?

First of all, does anyone else see the world coming full circle? The Beatles used video originally as a vehicle to get themselves out there without having to tour to sell a record, and here they are doing it again 30 years later. That's poetry.
Second of all, Keith Richards is the coolest old man alive.
Third, this show is almost over, and I'm quite disappointed in it. The first hour was awful until they showed some great footage of the Shea Stadium show. And did I blink too much? Two major factors in their success were ignored I think. One being that Liverpool being what it was provided an ideal place for the Beatles to get rare records from the US. And then the punishing Hamburg era which shaped and honed so much of the Beatles abilities and sensibilities. The second hour is better, but I think this show is pretty poor.
I felt like I was being spoon fed in order to sell a record that offers nothing new. Money.

Glenn,
The focus of the show seeemed more the impact of Beatlemania and the Beatles as opposed to a history.

same here. I was out playing Beatle music with the band last night. (we learned 2 songs by the Searchers and 2 by Roy Orbison as we're running out of do-able Beatles songs. We do about 70). Yes, LenMac, we're 40 somethings playing Beatles but not a tribute band trying to imitate them. We just play them. It's all in the mind, you know.

I hear you, maybe I'm being too picky, but I think that you can't even talk about Beatlemania without at least mentioning the building blocks it took to create it. You're right though, it was much more based on the American experience, which is fine.

A great TV special. Watching it brought back a ton of memories for me. The host posted a good question at the beginning of the show: "Were the Beatles the fuse or the rocket?"
Seeing the other celebs discussing the Beatles was a pure joy. I'm glad they got Sir George Martin to appear on it.

I thought it was great. Not a history of them but a fresh slant of their impact on the world. Extremely entertaing even for one who has seen many JBeatle documentaries. One question. What was Kate Hudson doing there?

No, towards the end of the show, they mentioned that "In My Life" was the greatest song ever recorded.

I guess you have to correct that again.
He should hire a barber.
I loved Woody at the Faces (Stay With Me) more than afterwards.

It was just a wee bit too sappy and bloated mind you, but you know the main thrust of the program was The Beatles. And I did enjoy hearing other peoples insights and opinions of the band and how it affected them personally. Also it's good to know that Keith Richards is not just some muddy headed blues guitarist. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif
