Authorities in the Russian town of Chelyabinsk are honouring late Beatle John Lennon by naming a street after him.
First proposed by journalists and musicians in the Ural Mountains city, the proposal was backed overwhelmingly by the city council.

The idea was inspired by the town's "secret twin" of Lennon, local musician Valery Yarushin, who is said to be the spitting image of the late performer.

Fellow Beatle Sir Paul McCartney sent an e-mail message saying he was happy to hear news of the tribute, according to the Russian news agency Tass.

The Beatles were hugely popular in Russia during Soviet times, when fans braved official disapproval to collect records of Western rock groups.

The news comes days after fans around the world marked what would have been his 60th birthday.
