Liverpool considering naming street for Lennon

''LENNON STREET'' - BIRTHDAY TREAT?
The people of Liverpool are being asked to decide if a city centre street should be re-named in honour of one of it's most famous sons. To commemorate John Lennon's 60th birthday on Monday, October 9, Liverpool City Council is seeking to dedicate a street in his name.

Liverpool City Council is asking for the public's views about re-naming a small stretch of North John Street, which could soon be home to a Beatles Hotel. The area is just a few hundred yards from the Cavern Club, in Mathew Street, where the Beatles first rose to fame.

The council is currently assessing a report and has decided to launch a public consultation to aid consideration of the proposal. For the next 28 days people will be able to write to the council with their comments, support or objections.

Suggestions for the re-naming are also welcomed. These could include; Lennon Walk, John Lennon Way, John Lennon Lane etc.

Council Leader Mike Storey said the new name could help generate a mini-tourism boom in the area. Councillor Storey added: ''This is a fantastic opportunity for Liverpool to honour John for his contribution to his hometown and to music. He was without doubt one of the most outstanding individuals of the last century. I personally think that to dedicate a main city centre street in his memory would be a great honour. It will recognise that what he stood for is as relevant in this new millennium as it was in his day. I will be very interested to hear the reaction of the public, local businesses and the wider community to the idea.''

Comments, suggestions and objections should be sent to: Brian Mason, Highways and Environment Services, 2nd floor Millennium House, 60 Victoria Street, Liverpool L1 6JF. The 28-day consultation begins on John Lennon's birthday (Monday, October 9) and will close on Monday, November 6.

The re-naming is only a proposal and is something, which has not yet been ratified by the council. Only a stretch of North John Street would be affected. North John Street would remain and with it, all of it's historical connections.

Liverpool to honor John's 60th birthday

CITY CELEBRATES LENNON'S 60TH BIRTHDAY The city of Liverpool is to celebrate the 60th birthday of John Lennon with a moving ceremony - at one of his favourite childhood places.
Julia Baird, Lennon's half-sister, will be joined by civic dignitaries and other guests including pupil's from Dovedale Infants School, John's old primary school in Allerton - as the city pays tribute to one of it's greatest sons. The ceremony, which is open to the public will begin at 10am on Monday, October 9. It will be held in the Peace Gardens in St John's Gardens, behind St George's Hall.

As a young boy John and his sisters would be taken by his mother to picnic in the gardens and to later visit the nearby Walker Art Gallery, which inspired his interest in the arts and culture.

After an introduction by Council Leader Mike Storey, Julia, who is seven years younger than her brother, will talk about those memories of John. She will then recite lyrics from one of his songs.

Julia will then be invited to plant a tree in the Peace Gardens, as Lennon's most famous song - "Imagine," is played in the background.

The music continues when pupils from Dovedale - who recently benefited from a £30,000 donation from Yoko Ono for school refurbishments - will sing "Happy Birthday" to John as 60 white balloons are released.

Irish actor Phil McQuillan, who is playing Lennon for the American NBC film ''In My Life'', which is currently on location in Liverpool, will then help draw the ceremony to a close. Phil will lead the Dovedale school children and Liverpool Brass band The Saturday Morning Music Club, through a rousing rendition of the 1967 Beatles classic; ''All You Need Is Love.''

2 The ceremony is expected to finish by 10.30am, when children from Dovedale will tuck into a specially baked birthday cake.

Julia Baird said: ''Planting a tree in John's memory is the warmest way to celebrate his birthday. You can have fireworks and parties, which are all very dramatic, but planting a solid English Oak tree is permanent and a new life. It is a fitting tribute to John. I'm very taken with this whole ceremony. My Mother used to take me, John and Jackie to St John's Garden when we were kids. She'd take us there for butties when we were in town and tell us all about the history of St George's Hall. We'd then go and spend hours walking around the Walker Art Gallery and watching Punch and Judy in Williamson Square. I know John and my mother would approve of how Liverpool has chosen to celebrate this day.''

Council Leader Mike Storey added: ''I'm sure many people still find it hard to accept that John Lennon is not with us today. I remember the crowds that thronged in front of St George's Hall the day he was killed. The emotions were very powerful and a sign of how so many of us looked to him for inspiration and hope. 'I think a ceremony likes this gives people a chance to remember him in a positive way and dwell on all the things he did that made so many people's lives that little bit richer.''

Here is a description of John Lennon's B-day bash in Liverpool from Abbeyrds

Liverpool to honor John's 60th birthday Update (10/10/00) From Jean Catharell in Liverpool (thanks, Jean!):

"Today I attended a civic ceremony in Liverpool city centre in which Julia Baird and some children from Dovedale School, plus the Lord Mayor planted an English Oak Tree to commemorate John's 60th birthday. it was a very moving experience.
The ceremony began with a opening speech by Liverpool City Councillor Mike Storey who spoke of John's early life in Liverpool and his legacy to the world. Julia Baird followed this with a short speech about John and then she read the words to In My Life. It got very emotional at the end and everyone was in tears almost. The school children sang "Happy Birthday" to John and then released 60 white balloons which were carried away in the wind. Julia then planted the tree while Imagine was played. A Junior Brass Band played "All You Need is Love" and everyone sang along.

VIPs invited and present were Alistair Taylor, The Quarry Men, Julia Baird (obviously) and various other people. There was quite a huge crowd who stood for over an hour in pouring rain and wind to honour John - it was all very civilised and Julia Baird mentioned to me that this was the nicest way John had been honoured this weekend. A true tribute and memorial, the tree will last forever.

Peace,
Jean http://www.come.to/liverpoolbeatlescene

'Happy Birthday' Lennon

The world's first museum dedicated to the life of John Lennon and the re-release of two of his solo albums mark what would have been the 60th birthday of the former Beatle on Monday.

His widow, Yoko Ono, opened the museum, which contains more than 100 items of memorabilia from the singer's life.

The release of John Lennon/Plastic Ono band and Double Fantasy albums will include the track Walking on thin ice, a song he completed the night he was shot by Mark Chapman in 1980.

Lennon's half sister Julia Baird will plant an oak tree in Peace Gardens, Liverpool - one of John Lennon's favourite childhood haunts - as part of the commemoration.

The Lennon museum is set in the corner of a sports arena in a suburban area north of Tokyo - an unlikely spot for a museum dedicated to someone who spent most of his life in Britain and the United States.

Special place

But his widow, Yoko Ono, says Lennon had a special love for Japan.

Japan was a very important place for John because John's son was half Japanese, but also we felt that we were somehow bridging the difference between East and West," she said.

Yoko Ono donated most of the items on display, including hand-written song lyrics, John Lennon's first guitar and a pair of his wire-rimmed glasses.

The museum is divided into separate zones featuring different aspects of the singer's life.

Beatles' songs play and visitors can watch a film about Lennon's life.

In Liverpool, Mrs Baird and pupils from Lennon's former primary school will plant the tree before visiting Walker Art Gallery where Lennon developed a love for art.

The school children will sing Happy Birthday in memory of the Liverpudlian singer.

Yoko Ono recently donated £30,000 to the gallery for refurbishment.

"Planting a tree in John's memory is the warmest way to celebrate his birthday," said Mrs Baird.

"You can have fireworks and parties, which are all very dramatic, but planting a solid English Oak tree is permanent and a new life.

"It is a fitting tribute to John."

Lennon was shot dead on 8 December outside his Manhattan home where he lived with Ono.

His killer Mark David Chapman lost his first bid for parole last week.
