<LI>Paul art exhibit to open in England
Paul is said to be angered by negative comments by art critic Brian Sewell about his paintings. He decried the "infuriating tendency amongst clapped-out pop stars to become artists . . . they usually reproduce unmitigated garbage and should stick to what they were doing . . . I don't think anyone should move into the visual arts at that age [McCartney began painting at 40] and expect to be taken seriously." Replied Paul, "I liked the idea of getting feedback, but the moment it got reviewed, people like Brian Sewell, whose name I shouldn't know but do, said, 'But he's hopeless! He just can't paint!' " Adding an expletive, Paul said, "You get plans to mug him. Find out where he lives, but then you say, 'No come on. You just don't do that.' "

I saw George Martin's multimedia lecture at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank 1 1/2 years ago. Highly recommend hearing first hand stories from the "horses mouth". He told how they slowed the tape down, and he played the keyboard solo to Lovely Rita, and then sped it up to normal. He got a standing ovation.

The following is the official press release from Capitol Records regaurding
the Plastic Ono Band/Double Fantasy reissue:

NEW YORK-Two remarkable albums by John Lennon, arguably the greatest rock
musician we will know in our lifetime, will be reissued on October 9, 2000,
on what would have been his 60th birthday.

The two albums' initial release dates were separated by a decade, but their
emotional resonance shows no sign of abating with the passing of time.
Rather, like much of Lennon's work, they have gained in stature and, although
they were each released at the dawning of a new decade and at times of great
social change - the 1970's and 1980's respectively - they are truly timeless.
The reissue of these albums brings together John's first post-Beatles solo
album with his last.

"John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" is seen by many as John Lennon's masterpiece,
offering a disquieting, riveting insight into a life spent in exploration and
illumination. Containing many of his most incisive and harrowing songs, like
``Mother,'' ``Working Class Hero'' and ``God,'' John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band
was originally released on Apple on Dec 11, 1970.

Now remixed and digitally remastered under the supervision of Yoko Ono, the
album is augmented by two bonus tracks - ``Power To The People,'' a single
originally released after the album, and ``Do The Oz,'' originally the b side
of the ``God Save Oz(Us)'' single which was covered by Bill Elliott and The
Elastic Oz Band. ``Do The Oz'' refers to ``Oz'' magazine, the leading
underground paper of the `60's; both tracks reflect the beginning of the
expression of John and Yoko's political interests. ``Power To The People''
was originally released in the UK on March 12, 1971.

Packaging for the album will feature the original cover art and photographs
for the album, plus rare pictures from the era, plus John's hand-written
lyrics.

"Double Fantasy," by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, was released in the UK on
November 17, 1980. Announced in the press release as ``a dialogue between men
and women, and their fantasies,'' the album was released amidst a barrage of
publicity; it was John Lennon's first studio album for 5 years and as word
spread, excitement was palpable.

In 1970, "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" had begun with the sound of a tolling
bell. Ten years later, in a deliberate echo, John opened what was to be the
final album of his life with another bell. This time it was no slowed-down
harbinger of doom, but the benevolent tinkling of a traditional Japanese
wishing bell and the track it introduced, ``(Just Like) Starting Over'' was a
message of hope, of renewal, a message not lost on Lennon fans over the
world.

By the beginning of December " Double Fantasy" was in the U.S. Top 10 and
climbing to No. 1, and John and Yoko were working on a new Yoko track,
``Walking On Thin Ice'' that had been finished too late for inclusion on the
album. The track was finished on December 8th and is now inextricably linked
to the events of that night, the night John Lennon was killed.

Its inclusion on the new version of "Double Fantasy," along with two other
bonus tracks, seems to complete a very powerful lyrical cycle, as it is now
impossible to listen to "Double Fantasy" as a record isolated from the events
surrounding it.

Now digitally remastered, "Double Fantasy" features 3 bonus tracks - the
previously unreleased John Lennon song ``Help Me To Help Myself,'' Yoko's
``Walking On Thin Ice'' and ``Central Park Stroll,'' a short dialogue of John
and Yoko walking in Central Park. These tracks continue the duality of the
original album, which is comprised of consecutive John Lennon and Yoko Ono
tracks. ``Central Park Stroll'' unites the two at the end of the album.
Retaining the original artwork, "Double Fantasy" also includes additional
photographs from the era.

In the 20 years since his death, John Lennon's music has reached out to new
generations of artists and fans alike. He has inspired countless musicians
who have used his music as a springboard for their own creativity and helped
take his message to a new audience. It came as no surprise that Oasis ended
their recent shows with his image projected onscreen behind them; they will
not be the last to acknowledge their debt to who is seen by many to be the
most important singer/songwriter of the last 50 years.

On October 9 in Tokyo the world's first permanent John Lennon Museum will
open. Later that month there will be a major John Lennon exhibition at The
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland. Amongst the retrospectives, it
is strange to relate that, to a lot of people over the world, John Lennon has
never really gone away.

The music on these two reissued albums helps us understand why.

<LI>Paul calls for landmine ban

At a UN conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Paul McCartney Monday called for a ban on landmines, reports Q Online. In his speech, Paul, who attended the conference with Heather Mills, said, "We support the campaign to get every country to join the Ottowa Convention. We want to see an end to the use, manufacture, production, stockpiling and export of landmines. We applaud governments that have already joined. The treaty is a vital step forward. ... But there is still an urgent need for greater effort to clear mined land and to help the victims. Not enough is being done. Too many people are still being killed and maimed, too much land can't be used. This is a problem that can be solved, if we want to. Every minute counts."

<LI>Paul: here, there and everywhere
In a lengthy and revealing interview with the UK Guardian, Paul reflected on his past, present and future, much of it around the subject of Linda McCartney. He says Linda's memory is still strong and that he finds himself even conversing with her. "It is the weirdest thing to say because she's not here, but I think most people who've lost someone know what I'm talking about. A lot of people I know talk to Linda. Our old housekeeper Rose says, 'Good morning, Lin,' every day." He then turns to discussing his romance with Heather Mills. "I have a new romance with Heather Mills, and I'm very into it, She's a great girl, you know. And I have to talk to Linda about that. You know, 'What am I doing babe? How d'you feel about this?' and what she says is, 'If I was there you'd be dead meat, sucker. But I'm not there and I want you to be happy.' That's the feeling I get back." Paul compared the two of them. "Nobody's ever going to do either of them, no person would ever put them down. Put them down at your risk . They have big hearts. I think they would have got on great actually." And discussing a subject often speculated on by fans, he says he says how close he is to both surviving former Fabs. "And before John died I got my friendship back on track..."

<LI>Famous names come together for Lennon tribute
Paul Weller, Oasis and the Stereophonics are among those who have recorded tracks for an upcoming tribute to John Lennon, reports Dotmusic. They say Noel Gallagher has recorded a version of 'I'm Only Sleeping' with the Stereophonics at George Martin's Air Studios and also may be working on a version of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' with members of Cornershop and Johnny Marr, while Weller has recorded 'Instant Karma."

<LI>) A few details on the book: One source told us, "Just as an example of the Anthology's contents, in the final section of the book (labeled 1970) contains the letter that John and George sent Paul telling him that they had just met with EMI behind his back and ordered the company to delay the release of "McCartney" to June 16 -- where it could be unveiled at the Capitol Records convention in Hawaii. It ends with "Don't take this personally. Love John and George" Then George writes under his name " A mantra a day keeps the miya away." On an aside, the bookstore pulled the other two copies off its shelf after I purchased my copy -- I had gone there yesterday to buy another copy and was informed it is not available." Another says, "A little bit of trivia about the book. It end with this quote from John Lennon: 'By hook or by crook I'll be the last in this book.' " (Thanks to Brad and John.)
Apparently, the book has already been shipped to at least some stores and our earlier report might not be an isolated case, though stores risk problems from publishers if they sell it before the release date. Also, David Scherer tells us that in Norway, the Beatles Anthology book will also be released in a limited edition version reported to be 8000 copies and translated into Norwegian. Cost of the Norwegian edition will be NOK 650 approx. USD 70. Release date October 28. http://www.chroniclebooks.com/beatles.html Official Book Site

<LI>Rock Hall announces Lennon exhibit (9/20/00) A press release:

SOURCE: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Proudly Announces a Retrospective on John Lennon 'LENNON: His Life And Work' Opening October 19th

CLEVELAND, Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum proudly announces an upcoming retrospective on John Lennon. Titled LENNON: His Life and Work, the comprehensive exhibit will open on October 19th and run through the summer of 2001.
This is the first major American exhibit on John Lennon, and it coincides with the 60th anniversary of his birth (October 9th) and the 20th anniversary of his death (December 8th). The exhibit is being mounted with the full cooperation of Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono Lennon, and the vast majority of the artifacts are from her personal collection.

``I am very happy that the first major American exhibit on John Lennon: His Life and Art is opening in the year of his 60th birthday. John, the singer songwriter in him, would have been especially pleased that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum is doing this as a tribute. It's an honor he would have accepted with joy. When you come to the show, you will see that this is not just an exhibition but a statement, just as John was all his life. Jim Henke and his staff worked hard and well. I am looking forward to being there myself. See you then. Enjoy!'' said Yoko Ono Lennon.

Jim Henke, the head of the Museum's curatorial and exhibitions department and curator of the exhibit, said of John, ``Few artists have impacted popular culture the way that he did. Both as a member of the Beatles and on his own, John was a pivotal cultural figure in the Sixties and the Seventies and is still revered by artists and musicians today.''

``This is a tremendous gift from Yoko to John's fans,'' continued Henke, ``and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will be the only place in the United States where they will be able to see this rare and valuable collection.''

In addition to several hundred artifacts, the exhibit will feature a short film about John's life. It will be located on the 4th, 5th and 6th floors on the Museum.

Enterasys Networks will be the official sponsor of the John Lennon exhibit. Enterasys' contribution will provide underwriting support for this major exhibit and networking equipment for the Museum's ongoing operations. Enterasys is focused on providing global enterprise network solutions for e- business.

Among the artifacts featured in LENNON: HIS LIFE AND WORK are:

-- The bed used by John and Yoko, made from two church pews, when they
first moved to New York.

building. He composed many of the songs for Double Fantasy and Milk and
Honey on this piano.

John's last concert performance; various guitars used on the Double
Fantasy sessions.

About the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:

George deserves to be inducted as a solo artist, but Ringo? Well, he was a great addition to the Beatles, but his solo stuff is not good enough to warrant a spot in the hall of fame. I'm as big of a Beatles fan as the next good man, (or woman) but let's not kid ourselves. Ringo's solo career was much less than spectacular.

That is absolutely not true. He IS recognized for being Ringo Starr, and is in the Hall of Fame as a member of the Beatles. However, his solo music is not good enough to give him a spot as a solo artist.
