I heard that Mal got shot dead by the LAPD. And I heard that his ashes were lost in the mail.
So, my question is this - WHAT IN THE HELL?
Somebody fill me in, for I know nothing.

This is a direct quote from a book I have;

"Jan 5, 1976-Mal Evans, former Beatles' assistant, bodyguard and one of the few individuals who was truly close to The Beatles, was shot and killed by police in a Los Angeles motel. In a drugged stupor, he had become uncontrollably violent, appeared to be attempting suicide and had apparently pointed a loaded rifle at policemen who then shot him."

I'm not sure about the ashes being lost, although I do recall reading something about that. I also recall Paul saying that if he (Paul) had been there, he's sure he could have talked to Mal and calmed him down, thus avoiding the whole ugly incident.

Thanks Glenn!
This is quite shocking? I mean, he was a gentle giant, right? And drugs? And violence? And guns? And he got killed?
I want more information!

Mal and Lil were divorced in '75, and he apparently felt cut off from everything. Here he was alone in America, the Beatles weren't around, no more Lil...

On 4 Jan '76, his depression had deepened to such a state that he took a .30 caliber lever-action rifle and chased Frances Hughes out of the house they were living in.

Frances was terrified because Mal had retreated to the upstairs bedroom with Frances' 4 yr old daughter, still holding the rifle. She called the cops and reported that Mal had flipped after taking too many pills.

The cops arrived ready for the worst, and demanded Mal come out unarmed. He told them they'd have to "blow (his) head off"... and they stormed the bedroom, only to find Mal lying across the bed with his rifle. He responded to their demand that he drop the weapon by aiming it at them...

The autopsy indicated Mal was neither drunk nor was he under any but a therapeutical dosage of Valium... there goes Frances' theory that Mal had flipped on pills. However, the rifle was loaded with live rounds, and one was in the firing chamber.

It appears Mal wanted to commit suicide, but he simply could not ... and forced the police to do it for him.

It's all very sad.
