View Full Version : A Question for the Younger Fans
PennyLane
Jul 16, 2000, 04:46 PM
To the younger beatles fans:
Do your peers tend to like the Beatles or more modern music? My friends tend to like current pop, like Backstreet Boys (a talentless group of prepubescent poster boys.) Only a few like the beatles, despite my efforts to convert them. Does anyone else have anything to say about this issue? If you ask me, people judge the Beatles because they are an old band. I think that if I played a Beatles song on a Top 40 radio station saying it was by a popular artist, it would be a megahit among my generation.

Great description about Backstreet Boys. Couldn't put it better myself.
About the topic. I know a few people my age who like the Beatles, in fact most people in my school like them, but don't want to talk about them constantly like I'd like to. A few are into my PiD page at the moment as well.

obessions are fun, yes our friends (14) like those bsbs or somethings, but they dont write their own music. i mean even elton john wrote at least the melody. the beatles are timeless. and if i may say a beatles (and donny mcclean) cult is rising by us.

I dunno if I'd even count as a "younger" fan, but I do agree that if one played a Beatles song and tried to pass it off as a "new artist," it would get a warmer reception among the kids. At least, that's what I experienced in the early 80s when I was a teenage lass...
I think there's a popular misconception that the Fab Four were somehow "goody-goodies." This despite the stolen leathers in the early days, the Butcher Cover, John's heroin addictions, etc.
Huh.

Everyone asks me why I love the Beatles so much. Well, one reason is that theyre lyrics aren't all full of smut and things like that. That band has got to be THE most humble band ever on earth! In 1964 they went to and orphanage and helped the kids paint easter eggs, and I thought, 'You don't see any other band do that stuff! These guys rule!!'.

I wish people at my school had respect for The Beatles, and it's true, they judge them because they are an old band. I actually know ONE guy who listens to them. I've lent my friends The Beatles and John Lennon and it was cool, cuz they liked it!! My friend Dahnee watches me read my Beatle books, wear my Beatle shirts and he says, "Ugh, look at them, they're gay. Them and they're suits" Then there's the classic, "They're dead!" or, "You like old guys?"...yes, as a matter of fact, I like old, dead, guys.

alot of my friends listen to "normal" *cough* music. But ever since I became a fan, I've been trying to convert them, and the ultimate anti-beatle just joined our tribute band! WHOO! What I think is funny is when people say "the beatles are anti-Christ." "aye? What do YOU listen to?" "eminem." uh-huh. riiiiight.

I tend to agree. I started liking the Beatles in fifth grade (which seems like ages now, but it was 1995!) and I took a tape player around everyday trying to get my friends to listen to my Abbey Road tape. It's not easy to convert your friends when they already have a certain mindset for older groups.

Some of my friends like the beatles and some dont. my best friend tolerates them. But I've shown her so much beatle footage in terms of movies and stuff that she and I have own in-jokes about them! there are quite a few kids at my school who like the beatles at least somewhat. Some of my relatives though think my mom brainwashed me into liking them but this is totally not true! I liked them all on my own! I hate it when they say that! I admit my mom got me into liking them, but I didnt become a major fan till a few years later and that had nothing to do with my mom.

My friends are spilt into different groups: Theres the group who like modern, popular music; theres the group who like modern music but the more alternative stuff (i like that too) and they like some older bands (the older bands they like are Led Zeppelin, AC/DC etc); and thens theres me who likes the Beatles. Two of my friends are fans of The Beatles but they're not huge fans. But at my school people don't judge you on what music you like which is good. Seems like thats just my school though.

well, i became a monkees fan before i was a beatles fan (of course, thought my classmates, what could be dorkier than a monkees fan?), and when i finally did "convert," i was lucky enough to take my best friend with me. i had converted her to a monkees fan first, so it was much easier for us both to get into the beatles.
i'm lucky enough to have a sort of beatles-tolerant situation here, having two bands coming out of my school, one who lists the beatles as an influence and another who actually play beatles songs in their sets. we're really not the typical "bsb" "nsync" school.
oh, and obsessions are good images/icons/smile.gif i'm even publishing an article this month in the school newpaper on beatles impersonators. haha

Everybody I know at school are only into the modern stuff, I believe I am the only Beatle fan in the entire school. When ever I mention the Beatles at school they either want to know more about the Beatles or they could care less. The students at school are black majority so white is a minority there, so there aren't a whole lot of people who would be fans. It's kind of hard to find someone who has the same interest in the Beatles as I do. But I hardly ever get put down for my Beatle love, I try to keep them to myself so no one can make fun. Nobody in the music world today will be remembered for the next 40 years like the Beatles. I hardly know any at all today. The Beatles have always been and will be forever my most favorite band. They are the greatest. I actually discovered them on my own, and I'm only 17. Well that's all what I wanted to say.

Everyone is trying to get me into the modern rock like Sublime, Linkin Park, and all that. But luckily, there are a lot of kids at my school into "classic rock" so that's pretty neat.

well my friends at school think the beatles are cool and they know one song from them and like it.
my friends are into some punk music and i think its ok. but some people who listen to country or hip hop (like thats galaxies away from being better) put me down for liking the beatles and some of my friends back me up. i think its pretty cool that half of my friends like led zeppelin and the beatles too.

WELL! I have some strange opinions on music. I like pretty much everything (yes.. I even like some hip-hop *gasp*).
I'm definitely into electronica, hardcore, metal, pop-punk, etc.
As for my friends, they like pretty much the same. There are a few who are into the Beatles, the Who, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc etc.

Depends how you class a young fan...I'm 28 & all my mates younger/older male/female know the songs not to the degree I do.
Its personal choice I listen to all sorts of stuff from early rock'n'roll & before that (40's 50's ray charles, elvis, chuck berry, larry willianms) thru all the 60's stuff (all the great bands in that decade beatles, stones, yardbirds, kinks, hollies, hendrix) thru the 70's (queen, led zep, aerosmith, acdc) punk(clash, jam, pistols) & newer heavier stuff (metallica, sepultura, guns'n'roses, nirvana, pantera) & main stream stuff red hot chilis, foo fighters, white-stripes, rem, u2, the wildhearts & loadza of other stuff too
My top 5 bands of all time 1)Beatles 2)Queen 3)Metallica 4)Aerosmith 5)The Wildhearts
The one important thing to remember about the beatles which tends to be forgot maybe thats not the right word "taken for granted" ... is their back catalogue & history remains unblemished i.e. they havent continued like the stones contining to release albums & always having it compared to their "golden era" which was probably late 60's - early 70's in ref to the stones.
If you're brutally honest the solo output of all 4 beatles was never upto to the standard of the 4 of them together...but its ok cos the beatles "split up" ... you can go back to the beatles & everything is all nice... so maybe there is an argument for us all wearing beatle-tinted glasses... i dont know for me personally its gone on too long... my whole life - lol
Which probably explains why younger people get attracted to the beatles because those active years 1962-70 (music aside... im referring to the romantic idea) are locked away forever all pink & rosey & john lennon once said "its only a band that split up you've got all your old records to reminisce" which is what we're all guilty of me included... cos I know people who are friends who think the beatles are the most overrated band ever ... i dont subscribe to that myself... but i can see their points. I will divulge into them at a later time if people are interested

I had some (a lot of) trouble from my peers in middle school. But... Not so much in high school, and definitely not now in college. It seems that with age, people learn to respect the older music. Of course, I never really criticized them for their tastes. Don't cane me, but I'm a fan of pop music. Maybe not necessarily the artists, but I like the music... Of course I'm biased, because that's what my boyfriend writes, and I'd say he's pretty darn good at it. I guess I just like everything... Okay, maybe not rap... But still.
I did have a tough time in middle school, though. It was horrible. My best friend and I were constantly tormented. Finally everyone learned how to grow up, make ammends, and become friends. Some of the people who tormented me in middle school turned out to be better friends than the ones I had at the time... I guess it's strange how things turn out sometimes.

At school they don't like the Beatles. But sometimes I think it's because of the "enviroment", you know. I go to a private school, and all the guys tend to listen to "cool" music, "modern" music. They do it just to show they're cool, but I just think they're nasty! Idon't think they know what music is. graemlins/music1.gif

I'm 19 and I'm the only big Beatles fan that I know. Most of the people I know go for that predictable trendy "new rock" nonsense. I don't care all that much for "contemporary" music. I've only got 2 albums from 2000 onwards- "By The Way" (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and "Be Not Nobody" (Vanessa Carlton). I am very unlikely to by a new album from an artist, as soon as it comes out, as a lot of people I know would do.
My top 5 artists of all time are: The Beatles, The Kinks, Queen, Spandau Ballet and The Beach Boys. That tells you all you need to know about my music tastes. The Beatles are just the most obscenely talented group of all time, just look at the last few years for example, they "hated" each other apparently but the music barely suffered. Now that's class.

Hallo everybody! I'm new...and a young fan too! I'm 22, I started listening to the Beatles at 14 with Abbey Road. My father is one of the biggest fan of them, so this is the reason why my name is Linda!!! My friends in general don't like the beatles. I know very few people who like them. and if they do, they don't do it like me!!Prejudice..this is the word. Beatles equal old equal they suck! It's not true. People know only the usual ones...yesterday...let it be...michelle! OK they are great songs but the beatles are more than this...but people is not aware...MTV shows Destiny's child and Britney Spears, and younger people beleive only in these "stars". Let's make a Beatles TV!!

I see things haven't changed much images/icons/frown.gif . When will people wise up? This Beatle dissing has been going on even back when I was in school over 20 years ago! "Old" bands such as The Beatles and even Led Zeppelin (people would refer to them as Dead Zep!! graemlins/chainsaw.gif )were uncool to listen to and if you weren't listening to Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, Oingo Boingo (they were big in my school), you were a graemlins/square.gif ! While I liked those bands too, everyone knew I was nuts over The Beatles and Zep, so I took alot of ribbing, as you can guess. graemlins/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

My friend's and I have totally different taste when it comes to music, and only a very very small portion even know who the Beatles are. Thankfully, they don't bother me too much about it. The music they usually like to listen to is mostly rap and the Nickelback-type rock. A few people I know of (myself included) listen to bands like Coldplay and Radiohead, while fewer still *admit* to listening to jazz. I think that this is a pretty accurate cross-section of society, actually -- there's not much more of the poppy pop music (BSB included) on the market anymore... I mean, even Justin's gone R&B and he was the prettiest of the pretty-boys!!! images/icons/wink.gif

Well, I have to say, I love modern music, too. My favorite modern bands have to be Linkin Park, Evanescene and Nickelback.
My friends...well, my girlfriend likes the Beatles. She's not a big fan, but she really likes them, so she can tolerate my obsession. My former best friends like Queen and the like, but they shun the Beatles simply because of Lennon's 'bigger than Christ' quote. My girlfriend's best friend, (and probably mine) HATES the Beatles. But I have two other female friends who love them, one of them is absolutely obsessed, the other is a fan. So there's my friends and the Beatles. Luckily, I have teachers who love them, too.

I have always had trouble getting any of my friends to just listen to 20 seconds of a Beatles song. I know it is because The Beatles are from a generation gone by but that doesn't mean they are any less talented. There is no one with in my inner cirlcle that likes The Beatles as much as I do and that is why I search for places like this where I know I will fit in:)
