Hello again!
Thank you to all the people who have been so welcoming to me. I am a little new at this posting thing, but I do need some advice in two areas:
(One) I am trying to build up my "Beatle Library" when it comes to books. I tried the bookstore in our town and was overwhelmed. I own the Anthology and the biography by Hunter Davies. What other books do you recommend? Which authors are reliable/unreliable? Etc.
And (two): I asked about Tribute Bands last time and I know that there are many out there... In fact, there is one from Southern California called "The Fab Four" that has blown me away with their (musical) accuracy and personality. I have only heard a few other Tribute Bands, and they weren't too great... I was just wondering if there are any other recomendations out there.
Thank you so much for your kind responses. It is nice to know that - though surrounded by friends who can't stand any and all music from the 80's and past - there are people I can talk with about the music that I love. I can't wait to get to know more of you!

Hi Allie - welcome again! I've wanted to see "The Fab Four" because I've heard that they are excellent and one of the best out there. Glad to hear you agree! I'll be seeing a TON of tribute bands when I go to Liverpool in 4 weeks - I'll let you know then who's really good!
I think we have a great tribute band (American English) and also another good one (Revolver) here in Chicago. They're both kinda my buddies, so I guess I'll advertise a bit! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Allie! Re books: DO NOT READ ANYTHING BY GEOFFREY GIULIANO, he's slime!
That said, I highly recommend "Lennon" by Ray Coleman, by far the best bio of John that I have ever read, and one of the best bios I've read PERIOD. I also highly recommend "The Beatles Forever" by Nicholas Schaffner, which was out of print for a while, but might be around in reissue. Philip Norman's "Shout!" isn't a bad book, though unreliable in places. Any of the Mark Lewisohn books are invaluable for their info about recording sessions and other minutae. And Barry Miles' bio of Paul, "Many Years From Now," isn't bad either.
Hope this helps.

HMVNipper & Harbridge: Geoffrey Giuliano - Is he the author of Glass Onion? (I saw that one in the bookstore.) What is wrong with his books? I guess I'm a little illiterate when it comes to Beatles authors. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/blush3.gif

A belated welcome to Beatlelinks, Allie! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wave2.gif As you've already seen, this place is full of friendly and knowledgeable people.
I'll add a few other books to the list:
How They Became the Beatles, by Gareth L. Pawlowski--a history of the band from 1960-1964.
A Day in the Life: The Music and Artistry of the Beatles, by Mark Hertsgaard--alternates discussions of the albums with chapters on Epstein, Martin, the Lennon-McCartney relationship, the four-way synergy, etc.
The Playboy Interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, David Sheff, interviewer--I think this has been reissued under the title of "The Sheff Interviews" or something like that. A thorough interview with John and Yoko, conducted a couple of months before John's death. Also includes a song-by-song analysis of his work.
And don't forget John's own books: In His Own Write, A Spaniard in the Works, and Skywriting by Word of Mouth. Also, Alan Clayson has written good bios of Ringo and George.
See the Paperback Writer forum for more about books. And Allie, do you read fanfic? Nipper and I can recommend a good site to you....http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif

"Idiot's Guide to the Beatles" is just plain fun. I think I'll get that one for my mother. Goodness knows she's learned a lot about the Beatles from me.
Joe is right - Guilia-NO! AVISO! ACHTUNG! WARNING! STEER CLEAR OF GULIAno! He is a literary http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/pimp.gif and his latest caper, which was to write an Enquireresque piece about George Harrison is THE VERY LAST STRAW! His misinformation about the Beatles knows no bounds; he is full of more donkey dung than Senor Burro himself. STEER CLEAR OF HIM!
HMVNipper's magazine, www.rooftopsessions.com (http://www.rooftopsessions.com) is excellent and I think you'll find a place there. SF is another writer who has a lot of valuable input as well. Harb, HMVNipper, Joe, Dom and others have been good about posting relevant links. Cruise around on all the Beatle boards here and I think you will find yourself among friends. We all speak the same language. I am fluent in 1964 Beatle and am well versed in the 1965 Beatle John dialect. (pretty good for a late talker, eh)! Trust me, you will find we are all fluent in matters Beatle and you will find yourself singing a tune that joined us: "All Together Now."
Check out the books we recommended. Also, check out the reviews on www.amazon.com. (http://www.amazon.com.) We'd like to hear your input and feedback on this.

Alliesun,
Goldman wrote a book called "The Lives of John Lennon." The book is a sensationalistic foray into hostility; Goldman appears to really hate John and he made comments that he could not possibly support and did not possibly know. For example, he called John an emotionally disturbed child; he called Mimi's household a prison; he said John's fantasies involved violence towards women and often contained blasphemous overtones; he taxes John with having certain thoughts; he all but humiliates and flays Yoko in the literary sense and he appears to take delight in using John as a target for his poison pen.
John was not a saint, but he wasn't evil, either. John was a very intelligent man who had his share of problems and his manner of coping with same. If one were so bound and determined to label John, in today's world he would most likely fit into the ADD/ADHD category; it is clear from John's works and from his own natural expression that John was a right brained learner. (I recently read about right brained learners and my mother is a retired special education teacher who said she has taught many "Johns" over the years and the "Johns" she taught were highly creative and expressive).
Goldman's book will rile most people. Goldman is dead, so we can't dance on him with our pointy toed Beatle boots and we can't throw some flaming pies at him. Too bad. Goldman would have looked WONDERFUL with a plate full of pie flambe!

Alliesun,
I want to know more about the Fab Four. They are well known and I have heard only really good things about them. In Austin, the capital of the Lone STARR State, we have the Eggmen who get a B to B- as far as being a Beatles' cover band. They're all right, but...I WANT A BAND WHO REALLY SOUNDS LIKE THE BEATLES AND CAN DO EXCELLENT BEATLE COVER JOBS! It seems rather ironic to me that Austin is called the Music Capital of the World and a good Beatle band here is rarer than hen's teeth or donkey wings.
If the Fab Four tour the Lone STARR State, I hope they will play in Austin and make "Music Capital of the World" real instead of a misnomer.
Welcome, Alliesun! You will find that folks will be impressed with your fund of Beatle information. I think you will see that the regulars here are all fluent in the same language and we post from around the world. The internet is the shortest distance between two people. So is e-mail. Allie, I'm surprised no one has mentioned these tribute bands yet: Liverpool and Beatlemania. Both are very good. I saw Liverpool at a Beatlefest several years ago and really thought they were the best. Then I got a chance to see Beatlemania. They blew me away with their show. At times I really thought I was back in the '60s again. I even got "John" to acknowledge me to the others when I held up my Beatles jacket for them to see.

I checked out their website to see if they are playing in Texas anytime soon. Unfortunately they will be in places like NV, AZ, MN, and of course all over LA County, in the next several months, but no sign of Texas yet. They really are pretty good. Definately not the real thing, but - they sure sound like them. I think one of the things that impresses me the most is that they don't play with any backing tracks/CD's... It's just the four guys, and their instruments. With that, they successfull recreate studio songs like 'A Day in the Life"... Anyways, I hope I haven't babbled too much. Their site is registered with Beatlelinks, and there are some sound and video files there. (Oh, just to clarify - I know that there are at least two "Fab Four: A Tribute to the Beatles" groups - and I am talking about the one from CA.)

PM,
Thanks for the head's up on Beatle cover bands. You make me miss New York. I am not sure from your posting if 1964 is the name of a Beatle band. Very a propos considering that 1964 is THE YEAR OF THE BEATLES!

Hey PM, The Fab Faux are #1 on my list to check out when I'm in Liverpool in a couple of weeks. They don't play very often because they all have "real" musician jobs! I guess I'm spoiled because of the quality of the bands here in Chicago because I don't think Liverpool or 1964 are very good. They're both ok and fun, but neither really does it for me. Being an amateur musician with a really good ear makes me really picky! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/rolleyes.gif
