I used Skype when I worked on political campaigns. The computer dialed the person's number and you never saw their face; you talked like you do on the average telephone.

In radio interviews, I think Skype is the same, where you don't see the person's face. Is that correct?

Its a video chat. But theres probably some way to turn the video off. Or maybe either unplug the webcam or cover it with tape.

You can choose whether or not to use video. Or to view the other person, or three-way...

I haven't used Skype because I prefer to talk to friends in a not 'skype' way

All my real friends I know by face which does not make me want to contact them only via a social media.

It is like knowing BB - yes you - for so many years out here at Links but being one of the only very limited to 1 few of who I do not know the real name behind all the posts and PM's which causes a distance which I respect but do not understand where at the same time I think I do.

I've used Skype a few times and you can either write or talk to the other person and, in this case, you can choose whether to use the video or not.

Well, while I don't like to talk to my friends only using facebook, msn, blackberry or whatever (even though, nowadays, it seems that's the only way to talk to people), I think Skype can be quite useful on special occasions.

I used Skype to talk to my mom when she was stationed in Iraq.
I don't use it otherwise... So like Anaaaaby said, it's good for special occasions.

I am learning more about Skype. How do you get an account and what can others tell me about Skype?

BB i find skype really great because I have many friends overseas and of course my family on the otherside of the world. Now that we have a baby, we can share him with them online over skype. My mum says it's just as if she could reach out and touch him! We used to use it just as a telephone type system but now we webcam it up and do video chat. I'm not sure that aspect of it would be useful for you unless you were talking to people that you already knew in person....mind you, i only talk to people on video chat that I know and that I feel okay about seeing face to face. It's not like I go into some random chat room with the webcam blazing or anything!

To get an account I think you'd just go to the website and sign up! You have a skype username that people can find you with and you add people to a friends list much like other chat thingys like MSN or AOL. And yeah, as someone else has already said here, you can make the choice as to do video chat or voice chat so you don't always have to be seen if you don't want that.

Lucy, thank you and bless you! Is your son's name Edward, I think?

Lucy, I really appreciate your help and answer. I am seriously thinking about getting a Skype account so I can talk to people all over the country and even outside the country.

I love Skype. I use it mainly to chat with family and friends when I am at school, but I do have friends in Germany and Japan that I Skype with as well, and when friends of mine do study abroad, it's a great way to keep in touch with them.
